Just got a call from someone at "Eircom" about my router and downloading malicious software.

The brother didn't check but was the usual long/foreign number with the usual accent. Must be tired of trying the PC scam and moved onto the internet/routers

I got one at work last week as well. Same deal - long foreign number, accent and they asked me if I worked for a specific company, which I did as I was sitting in my office, and then started in with I needed to tell them about my email setup and the problems I was having.

I laughed and told them something completely wrong, told them we use Squirellmail just to see what they would say. As I work in the IT department and had them on the line for a few minutes telling them all sorts of wrong information just to see where they were going with this. They then started in with 'well, that email server you mentioned is having problems so we need these other details from your account...' which is when I laughed again and hung up.

So it would also appear they are now going through businesses and ringing them trying the same scam. And it wasn't just me, a couple people in the office got the call. Apparently they are also checking blocks of phone numbers based on the main number for certain offices. They ring the front desk as well looking to mine data asking for specific people or extensions and then just cold call everyone they can find in that block of numbers.

I love winding them up on the phone though, great craic!

Also fun to point out we use Linux once they start in with all the Microsoft or Apple stuff they tend to try and throw at you.
