I just asked for a price for a 6yr, 75,000 service for my 1.8 petrol Honda FR-V from a Honda dealer in NI.

    Price was £425:eek:

    Sounds very high to me.

    They said:

This Service would be 2.5 hours long, It will include changing oil and oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs.

We would check front and rear brakes, front and rear suspension, all lights and levels, tyres and pressures.

There would be a Vehicle Health Check carried out and A recall check.

    Sounds a bit rich tbh. That's €540

At your cars age, there's no point going to a main dealer.

Labour is probably 250 of that if its a Main dealer

    Yeah, its nearly €540!

And imagine they then find issues with brakes, suspension etc!!

A blind monkey could service your car to be fair.

Waiting in the parts department of renault in navan the other week they had a pricelist offering pretty much the same as you have above for 250. The parts to exactly that on my dads car were 130.

I think I will pass on the main dealer now and get it done elsewhere to be honest. Thanks all.

Just out of curiosity, I will contact the nearest RoI Honda dealer and see what they come up with.

I recenlty purchased products for two services for my civic 2.2 diesel. (one major service + one minor service)
    This includes:
    - 12 litres of Castrol Edge 0w30 (for two services 2x6litres)
    - 2 oil filters (for two services)
    - air filter
    - fuel filter
    - pollen filter
    - 10 litres of antifreeze coolant
    - sump plug washer

All products original from honda, except from oil.

This cost me less than €300 and will keep me going for 40,000km. But I'll need to do all work myself.

I dunno why you'd bother tbh. Its not the main dealers fault they have bigger overheads, and have to use all honda parts - but you will pay way over the odds to get it done at a main dealer.

I just want to compare North with South.

I must learn how to do a self -service! Surely it can't be that hard?

All the stuff bar checking the brakes/suspension can be done very easily.
And even then, its not that difficult.

It's not hard, but its easy to make a mess of. Also one needs to be careful as there is potential for injury.

Yeah that all sounds like padding to me, to justify the price.
Surely for a main dealer to 'check' suspension, brakes etc is a very quick job.

It's done at NCT quite thoroughly and any decent independent will do so too.

I know it's been said already but a good independent will have no trouble doing that work for you. Those Honda's aren't really that complex to require a specialist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,681 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Independent it is so.

Just in case anyone is interested, quote for same service from nearest RoI Honda dealer, €375 (approx £295).

    Rip off Northern Ireland, eh?

Nearest league of Ireland Honda dealer? ;)

    Still seems massively expensive!

Basic servicing us easy enough on most cars. Leave the big jobs such as timing belts to those in the know (ie indy's)

Brakes are also handy enough to inspect/service, buy a torque wrench for replacing pads/discs so you know they are not under /over tightened

Suspension tests are best done in the NCT. They give the cars suspension a thorough inspection.

Spark plugs are eye wateringly expensive for that engine...price them and see for yourself. I priced them at just shy of 100euro.

Should be long life plugs then? Did you price them online. You'd normally pay 50-60 euro for 5 year plugs in a motorfactor. Works out the same as 5 sets of 12 euro plugs!

    They're iridium plugs

Non iridium tip Densos are €5 each. Given how little work is involved in fitting I'd just get them.

Only worth getting if your going big miles between full services in a garage.
