Another one for Wolf of Wall Street here.

I don't want to turn this into a list thread, but I really need to get my arse in gear when it comes to the classics, first up Das Boot.

I've heard people rave about Wolf Of Wall Street but honestly everything I've heard makes me think I'd hate. The fact it's nearly three hours long means that I really amn't pushed about ever seeing it.

I haven't seen Citizen Cane or a lot of the old "classics".

Was thinking the same thing...over the last couple of months I try and watch one old classic a week. Haven't seen Citizen Cane either but thanks for reminding me.

Yes. It's a bit downbeat, don't go in expecting something similar to The Goonies

I hated it tbh. It's Goodfellas-lite but with none of the depth or insight.

I've never watched Rocky, Raiders of the Lost Ark or Star Wars from start to finish. You know when you've caught so many glimpses of them on TV that you feel you've seen the whole thing but haven't?

I haven't seen the ones in bold. Of the others the only ones I'd recommend would be the first 3 Indiana Jones, The Great Escape, and Shaun Of The Dead

I have seen both. I think Inglorious Bastards was overrated and not really that good. Schindlers list do is really good and most definitily a classic. I have seen it but it has been a while since I watched it last.

Want a great film to watch try "Inside Man" Its so underrated I don,t know why as it is a really clever and brillant film.

want something scary try Alien or Event Horizon both brilliant and Alian is definitly a classic.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

A whole bunch of Ingmar Bergman movies. I watched The Seventh Seal, and even though I liked it a lot, it was a slog.

Also, Andrei Tarkovsky. I've had Stalker for ages, but I'm worried it's gonna be hard to get through, so I just haven't been in the humour for it.

Haven't seen The Godfather in years and it bored me senseless. I'm long overdue a rewatch.

Shaun on the other hand is hilarious and one of the best comedies recent years. Will be viewed in the future the way Airplane! is now

    None are really.

I'd disagree with that to be honest. Wolf of Wall Street was hugely entertaining and had superb performances from di Caprio and Hill. Rush was probably the best film I watched last year, again with excellent performances from the two leads and an absolutely compelling story. However I will admit that I'm a big F1 fan, so the subject matter interests me more than most, but my wife isn't and she thoroughly enjoyed it as well. The only one I'd skip is American Hustle. Great acting performances, but I found the plot tedious and far to drawn out. I'd only watch it again if it could be re-edited to knock 45 minutes off the running time.

Have read the book and it was brilliant, started it in Dublin airport and finished it in a car from San Francisco to San Jose.

Das boot is excellent. Best submarine film ever, puts crimson tide to shame. Be warned it's not balls to the wall action, just incredible suspense.

A lot of people talking about the wolf of wall street, it's fine, but by no means essential watching. Just watch Goodfellas. Better in all aspects.

Inglorious basterds was very good, but too long. It's hard to motivate myself for a rewatch, enjoyed django more. Though pulp fiction would be a better tarrentio movie for all concerned.

I've been trying to hone up in classics myself recently, I highly encourage everyone to watch 12 angry men if you haven't seen it. It's one of the greatest movies ever. Watched one flew over the cuckoos nest, didn't think it was too great. I also watched escape from Alcatraz last night, won't be watching it again.

It's actually one of the rare situations where the film is better than the book IMO.

You don't need to watch them in the order you listed, but definitely put Shaun of the dead lowest on priorities there.

Totally agree with you about 12 Angry Men, great film. If you have half an hour Hancock's Half Hour did an very good parody of it. I thought Cuckoos Nest was excellent but I probably wouldn't watch it again, it's so sad and Nurse Ratchet is such an utter bitch!! I can't remember hating a film character as much.

Just finished watching Kind Hearts & Coronets. Bit disappointed but there's definitely humour in there which I would have thought would be ahead of its time. The Odd Couple, The Apartment, and M*A*S*H are some classics I'd recommend.

The Bridge On The River Kwaii is one I've been meaning to watch for years. I'm sure it'll be on telly at some stage over Christmas.

Lawrence of Arabia - It's just too long
There's an intermission so it's easy to watch in 2 sittings. Such a great film, nobody makes epics like it anymore.

I actually prefer the second. The first is just a really entertaining bloodbath but the second really makes you care about the bride and root for her too. After Jackie Brown it has the best character development of any of tarantino's movies.

It could be half the time if they cut some of the admittedly lovely, yet boring shots of the desert that add very little to the narrative. It also suffers from that thankfully long dead tradition of Hollywood casting white men as Arabs and coating them in fake tan.
