    Good plan.
We're doing the dress rehearsal on Sunday. You can never be too well prepared.

"I'm going Apples and Nutting" doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "I'm going trick or treating"...

They'd be disgusted if you gave them apples or nuts these days.

True. In my day we only got apples and nuts. And we were always disgusted.

"Help the Halloween party" - that's what we said (I'm 33).

I always loved getting nuts actually, have been munching on them all week too, amazing things.

We just knew it as going out 'collecting' at Halloween. You would knock on a door and ask 'Any Apples or Nuts'?. Most of the time you got sweets or a few coppers but the auld ones would still fill your bag with windfall

nasty sly fooker used to put used tea bags in the kids bags of stuff. They'd burst and the poor auld sweets and bits would be ruined. Got our own back throughout the year scourging him with plenty of knick knacks.

We used to say, any apples or nuts and then later on when we got a bit bigger we'd say help the halloween party in the hope of sweets.

One house on our road was posh, they always gave you something great like a wham bar. One year they must have been extra posh and had a tin or roses open on the hall table. Immediately scourged with kids looking for "a rose"

In the poor houses, you might only get a quarter of an apple, lol!

Trick or treat me hole. Any child that said that would get stuck in arse with a compass thorough the hole at the back of the school chairs (remember them)

    Good Times!

Yep, modern kids say "Trick or Treat!"
Once a couple of them even sang for me, the Barney version of the Alphabet song, ending with the letter ZEE #HORROR!
    - and these were Dublin kids!!

I glared at them and said, "Victims of cultural imperialism! You watch too much TV!"
    (it's ok, they giggled)

We always said "Any Apples and Nuts" too and those are a real genuine survival of the origins of Halloween, native Irish harvest treats. I still always include a few among the sweeties.

The apples or nuts thing had a little chant to it as well..... you'd shake your bag as you said it!!!

Any apples or nuts? Any apples or nuts?
We don't wan't shells or we don't want butts,
All as we want is your apples and nuts!

That was going back to my Mums time!!!!

I'm 33 and ours was ' anything for Halloween?'

although in Waterford it came out as 'a-en for Halloween.'

trick or treat was only heard on tv.

Help the Halloween party is what I said but only cuz that's what me mam told us to say.
My teens were great though. Sitting on the couches that people were throwing out for the bonfire.
Have them beside the fire, then have few and of bulmers or devils bit and hook up with whatever young one was there at the time.
    Great times.
