Horror for kids

So we are having a Halloween party for kids and I am looking for movie recommendations. The average age will be 9. I'll be running the movie choice past parents first but would like to get it as scary as possible without them being traumatised for life. I'm finding it difficult on two levels. Firstly I can't remember how scary some older movies were and secondly the older age classification is either pg or 15, ideally I would be think of A 12a. Ghost busters and Jurassic park were front runners but too many of the kids have seen them.
    All suggestions are appreciated

Few animated ones Monster House is excellent. Paranorman and Frankenweenie worth a look, Coraline is good, maybe bit edgy for very young. If you want completely inoffensive Hotel Transylvania. Thought it was crap, but my kids liked it.

Witches is good shout, Hocus Pocus has the odd scare in it too.

    Shop local (-ish).

Movie of the popular kid's horror books by Irish writer, Darren Shan.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

    Rating: PG13

Check the parent's guide to see if it's suitable for your kids.

The Hole, and of course the classic Hocus Pocus.

I'll imagine they've seen Hocus Pocus though, so go with The Hole. It's excellent and PG-13

This is the first film I thought of too. I remember watching it when I was younger but had to stop half way through and watch it in daylight the next day!

    Beetlejuice
    The Goonies
    Ghostbusters

Coraline, The Nightmare before Christmas, Hocus Pocus

How about The Nightmare Before Christmas, if that's not getting the holidays mixed up?

A slightly more leftfield suggestion, Spirited Away. My 5 & 3 yo love it.

    Beetlejuice

Just scary enough, but funny all the way through and an upbeat ending. Bad ending = nightmares.

    Wow

Thanks everyone. Never expected such a great response.
Lots of food for thought there.
What ever I pick I'm sure it'll scare the bejesus out of them

I would have thought beetlejeuse might be too scary & adult in tone for 9 year olds. And I know that at the age of 9 a lot of the hole would have scared the crap out of me
    all the clown doll stuff

Ghostbusters is maybe a safer bet, there is a fair bit of swearing in it though if you actually look back at it. Gremlins 2 might be a safe bet, it's a lot lighter & has the kind of humour that a 9 year old would probably enjoy

Just seeing that someone posted monster squad. That's a great shout. A kids movie that fits every classic horror character in
