I issued a cheque. For reasons that don't matter I wanted to check who cashed it ultimately. I asked for a photocopy of both side of the cheque. My bank told me that for reasons of data protection they could not send me a copy of the reverse side of the cheque.

    Is this right ?

In connection with a legal dispute I may need to produce the original version of a cheque that I issued.

Am I entitled, as the customer, to request the return of the original cheque as of right ? If not, I will probably have to ask for discovery of the cheque which seems a bit silly.

I work in banking and any time we've had a request for a copy of a cheque we send front and back out to the customer. Who in the bank told you this?

I wrote to my branch and got that reply in writing on a compliments slip. I thought that it sounded wrong. Thanks for the information.
