Okay. It's been about a year since this thread was made.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056985871

And now that ASM2 has come to pass, it's only fitting that we make a poll determining which of the two was better.

Of the two, for me, it's a no contest. Spiderman 2 just showcases just how great a superhero movie can be, and so far, I've yet to see a movie that can stand toe to toe and be its equal.

    So then...what say you, Boardsies?

Which is the better movie? 61 votes

I'd watch Spider-Man 3 again before re-watching ASM 2, it was awful but at least it wasn't boring.

Best thing about ASM2 was Han's Zimmers score, it was a bit out there in places but worked.

Spiderman 2 is the best of all the films.

The rest of them are absolute twaddle.

Tobey Maguire is the greatest cinematic Spidey, no question. Sure, his acting was a bit hammy in the 3rd one but it was miles better than the rebooted tripe. Also, who can deny those smooth moves?! :D

Oh, of course. When I saw the ASM movies, I couldn't believe how much of a jerk Garfield's Parker was. I just can't root for a hero who acts this way. Film Crit Hulk said this better than I ever could.

SERIOUSLY, WHAT IS PETER'S ACTUAL DILEMMA AND CONFLICT IN THESE MOVIES? THAT HE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO GIVE UP HIS KICK-ASS MAGIC GIRLFRIEND? THAT PEOPLE NEED TO GET OUT OF HIS WAY AND LET HIM BE AWESOME? THAT PEOPLE SHOULD ALWAYS TELL HIM THE TRUTH AND TRUST HIM WHEN HE'S GIVEN NO EVIDENCE OF BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING RESPONSIBLE, BUT THEN PEOPLE OBLIGE WHEN HE MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE BAD PEOPLE? YEEESH. THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE THE RAIMI MOVIES COMPLAIN ABOUT THE CAMPY TONE AND STUFF, BUT THOSE MOVIES AT LEAST UNDERSTOOD HOW TO THROW CONFLICT AT PETER LIKE A MOTHER****ER. AND THE CONFLICT FOR PETER CAME IN THE FORM OF HOW INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT IT WAS TO LIVE LIFE WHEN YOU'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING.

SO ARE THESE PEOPLE REALLY JUST LIKING THE NEW SPIDER-MAN BECAUSE SPIDER-MAN IS NOT HIT WITH THESE CONFLICTS? IS IT JUST THE FANTASY OF SPIDER-MAN BEING THE JAMES DEAN BADASS? WHY IS PETER'S ONLY SEEMING DILEMMA THAT THE WORLD WON'T ALLOW HIM TO BE TOTALLY AWESOME AT EVERYTHING?

WHY HAVE A CHARACTER WHO SEEMS TO REVEL IN DOING THE WRONG THING ALL THE TIME AND WHEN IT COMES TIME TO CONTEXTUALIZE WHY CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THOSE WRONG THINGS ARE BAD, YOU DON'T, AND INSTEAD JUST GIVE HIM A VICTORY LAP AGAINST THE RHINO?

IS THIS MOVIE LIKE IF THOR CAME TO EARTH AND WILLINGLY GOT PEOPLE KILLED AND LEARNED NOTHING AND WAS THEN GIVEN HIS HAMMER BECAUSE THE WORLD NEEDED HIS HELP?

WHY ISN'T ANYONE REALIZING THAT THIS PETER PARKER IS ACTUALLY A SOCIOPATH? CUE THIS GREAT QUOTE FROM "@joshraby The weird thing about ASM2 is how Peter discards the verbalized needs of every single person he comes into contact with." YUP. LIKE IT OR NOT, PETER IS THE MOST SELFISH ASSHOLE "HERO" EVER PUT ON SCREEN AND THE MOVIE DOESN'T KNOW IT. AND THAT'S THE WHOLE KEY. DID THEY NOT REALIZE A CHARACTER LIKE TONY STARK WORKS IF THE MOVIE (AND EVERY OTHER CHARACTER) ACTUALLY KNOWS IT?

BUT SINCE PETER STILL HAS TO APPEAR TO BE A "HERO" THE STORYTELLERS OVERCOME THIS WHOLE "PETER DISCARDS ALL THE VERBALIZED NEEDS OF PEOPLE" THING IS BY SECRETLY POSITIONING EVERY DRAMATIC SO THAT IT'S NOT DIRECTLY HIS FAULT. SO EVEN THOUGH VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING BAD THAT HAPPENS CAN BE TRACED TO HIS HUBRIS AND WILLINGNESS TO SACRIFICE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, IT STILL EVENTUALLY POSITIONS THE MORALITY OF THE MOMENTS SO THAT NOTHING IS HIS FAULT, ESPECIALLY WITH GWEN STACY'S INSISTENCE TO HELP DESPITE ALL HIS PLEAS. OR THE WAY AUNT MAY IS GIVING HIM GOOD RESTRICTIONS AND THEN HE HAS TO HAVE A HEART TO HEART SO THAT SHE APOLOGIZES TO HIM BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO SELFISHLY BE HIS ONLY MOTHER OR SOME OTHER THING THAT MAKES NO SENSE? EVEN THOUGH WE'VE NEVER HAD ANY KIND OF INDICATION OF THIS BEFORE? YUP, JUST ANOTHER WAY PETER ALWAYS HAS TO BE THE AWESOME ONE WHO IS SECRETLY RIGHT.

I just don't get Garfields parker. He doesn't look paticuarly weak, he doesn't look like a nerd, he looks and acts like a typical teenage douchebag. At least Maguires spiderman got that right.

Read what I've posted just above you and you'll see that he's even worse than just not being a nerd.

Oh, don't get me started. A genetically predestined, well dressed, self centred, snarky regardless of mask hero who just happens to be right all the time. Yeah, a real hero, ladies and gentlemen.

Spiderman 2 is one of the best of all of the superhero movies so this was never going to be much of a contest.

the train scene gets to me every time when he passes out from the strain of trying to stop it and the passengers gently carry him on board
they tried to recreate that scene again in the new one with the crane scene but it was just weak

The ASM reboot sucked. So did ASM2.

Tobey Maguire over Andrew Garfield any day!

    Raimi's trilogy is much better.

I know I may be shot, but I actually think Toby McGuire was a much better spiderman. He had the whole geeky nervous thing down.
Andrew Garfield is too cocky in both personal life and films

I know I'm in the minority, but I absolutely loved ASM2. I was in awe coming out of the cinema. The fight scenes were scarce, yes, but they were entertaining, and I didn't mind the slow build-up to them. I was really blown away by
the death of Gwen at the end though. Obviously she died in the comics too, but I didn't think they'd have the stones to do it in a more mainstream medium
. I was really impressed by it

    Meh
Killing gwen is an easy out. Gives peter the reasoning he needs to become venom. plus gwen stacy isn't the best character

But they never did anything to earn that moment throughout the two movies. Gwen just wasn't all that interesting and her own (which could have been fixed if the death of her father in the first one had any real effect on her, but no, it's only Peter that's having that problem, because of the whole promise thing) and the way their relationship was written, which meant the scene in question just came off as muted, because we've seen nothing that made us believe in said relationship. Which is difficult when in the space of two hours, they break up and get back together multiple times (and much of that time spent was just them mending their break ups).
