I was running for the luas and didnt tag on with my leap card, I thought "I always pay so once wont hurt anyone", unfortunately the inspectors got on at the next stop and I was issued a fine. Instead of just taking the fine though I thought I'd be smart and give a fake name and address, but since they scanned my leap card will they have my real name and address? At this stage I dont mind paying the 45 euro, I was stupid and got caught, I just dont want to be prosecuted for fraud, will coming clean now be enough or am I screwed?

Just pay the fine and nothing should come of it.

"Judge, here on the video, we have the accused getting on the tram. .. and here we have our ticket checker issuing the the fixed charge penalty."

A conviction for perjury isn't something that looks good on a CV.

People are creatures of habit, I'm sure that the OP will want to use Luas again.

I once messed up my address when giving it to them but got the fine anyway somehow. I then proceeded to writ them a letter saying I was never on the Luas in my life even though I showed the inspector my college I.D. I got away scott free.

Just pay the fine and I'd say you'll hear no more.

You've just admitted to committing fraud, but you don't want to be prosecuted for fraud? Umm....ok....

How do you top up your LEAP card? Do you just top up with cash if you go? If you do, you probably have nothing to worry about, as they would have no way of knowing your real name and address.

But if you have automatic top ups coming from your bank account, you could be out of luck there, as they may be able to access your personal details from that.

You have to be prosecuted to be convicted. Unlikely.

I thought the Luas was free the first time I went to Dublin!

I asked a 1st year class once to think up one thing they thought the government was doing right. One girl said she thought the best thing any government anywhere did was to bring in the LUAS. She genuinely thought it was a free service (and had been merrily using it as such) and was absolutely mortified when the others in the class explained it was not.

Between all the free passes and fare evasion, I wonder how much it would actually cost to completely subsidise?

I was expecting to pay onboard. I never spot the ticket machine when I left Heuston Station. Then when I saw others stroll on I immediately jumped to conclusions!

Its not that easy for the OP. He gave a fake name and address, so he wont be receiving the order to pay a fine. He can't tell them he wants to pay a fine under someone elses name with out admitting his deception.

OP, did you register your leap card or did you buy it and just keep using it? If you just bought it, you're fine for now.

Completely off topic I know, but nearly a third of the population has a medical card and they recently brought in free GP visits for under 5s. I also wonder how much extra it would cost if everyone paid a small administrative fee, instead of nothing for many and 50 quid a go for those caught in the middle. Anyway, I digress....

You do realise that luas runs to more then 1 place

Next one to where you want to go could be a decent wait

After 9am on a weekday on my part of the track the Luas runs less frequently than a Sunday afternoon. Explain that one.

You should have just said you have always paid and as you were in a hurry this time you did not check to make sure the leap card had scanned but did wave it at the scanner when you passed it and you did not mean to take a free ride. As long has you did never register your card and are only topping it up at the machines you shoud be ok. Hey they never caught me hehe.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

The fixed penalty fare is given to you on the Luas by the ticket inspector.

    I wouldn't worry about it

Is it the line to Saggart? it would be because it only serves workers commuting during the week and kids on Saturdays.

I can't understand why they don't make you pay the fine on the spot. In Germany unless you have an ID on you( their state ID has your address on it) you either pay it on the spot or they take you a police station to confirm your ID. If you are a tourist with no money, you are brought to an ATM to get it. It's too easy to dodge a fine in Ireland.

But it's mildly ridiculous that you can't buy a ticket on the trams like in Germany. Every bus and tram in Germany has a ticket machine on it to buy a ticket.

It is a bit. Here in Norway you can still buy single-journey tickets directly from the driver....but you will be severely penalized in price for the pleasure. (Nearly double the prepay fare).

I think on-board ticket machines would be good idea, and should be placed on buses and commuter trains as well.

I can however imagine a situation where clever fare-dodgers would hang about the ticket machine on each journey and only purchase a ticket when they see a ticket inspection coming. However, I guess that could be overcome by giving the driver the ability to activate/deactivate the ticket machine in relation to ticket checks.

I've a monthly all zone pass, so whenever I tag it just says "monthly flexi pass". Coming from work once, I jumped straight on without tagging. Inspectors came on, told me that he could fine me if he wanted and I needed to get off at the next stop and tag on.

I did not actually know that you had to tag on with a monthly unlimited Luas card until that day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

You don't have to tag on/off

They want you to tag on/off so they can get accurate passenger use information.

Also to ensure your card gets updated with any credit or ticket renewals

I doubt they could fine you because technically you have already purchased your ticket. I tag on all the time with my annual ticket, but sometimes don't bother tagging off.

It's in the terms you have to tag on.
They may take this on their own head to let you away as you have paid it would be worse if non payment.;)

Tagging off isn't as bad they know you travelled so thats better then you been a ghost passenger where numbers traveling could be so much less but really could be over cappacity.
