    Hi ,

Looking at organising a group to do the Ring of Kerry charity cycle next year. Any tips re logistics, accommodation etc would be much appreciated. None of us have been before.

Any places particularly recommended re accommodation?

I know its very early to be planning..but want to make it hard for people to back out later!

    Cheers

Killarney has loads of options and if you can book something in town or on muckross road you should be fine

Your not too early, Id be booking now as the accommodation tends to get booked up early.

Book ASAP and yeah the muckross road is perfect for the weekend, even now affordable accommodation will be scarce as many people booked for next year as they left last year. As regards the cycle, just tip away with some spins throughout the winter and once we get to about mid march start ramping it up. Registration is usually mid march and it will fill up quickly so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Try one of the big b&b's in muckross road, the ones closest to town side. There are a few that have big shared rooms, nearly like dorms for 5/6 people, which are only 2 min cycle from stqrt, very reasonable too, and a 5 min walk from town for registration/ night out... I know people who stayed in Castle Lodge and have gone back a lot to their group rooms, but anywhere near it is the right part of town to look at

Wow I'm guessing mucross rd is the place to be. Everything is pretty much sold out on booking.com although I'd imagine room numbers were limited on there as the usual demand will mean a nice bump in the prices.

What time does it usually start. Probably won't get a pass for both nights so I'll probably head down Sat morning at ridiculous o'clock and look forward to the pints after. I ended up booking into Victoria house hotel just outside the town from the looks of things but I'd rather walk to the madness and be able to leave it.

I'm surprised at the lack of rooms already. Some hotels might be holding back for the time being? Or am I being naive?...

Well one thing that is jumping out at me is you saying you want to make it hard for people to back out later!..
So with that in mind, just purchase rooms online with the advance purchase option. With that, all monies are taken on making booking and would be classified as non-refundable as a discounted rate is given on provision of paying early ;)
That should make it a lickle more difficult to back out closer the date then, unless they get someone else to pay the rate they paid and take their bed.

    Hope that's of some help,

Officially from 7am (for support marshalling etc.) as far as I recall but many start earlier.

If you go too early you can miss a lot of the buzz. Last year I started at 6am and came in at noon - the finish line wasn't even set up yet.

I actually remember you posting about that alright. Bummer. Yeah I think I'll be going for the buzz instead of a pb I can set one of those on another day it's less crowded.

Thanks for the info. Sorry op for jumping on your thread. Just as a heads up you can book on booking.com and some places allow cancellation at no charge up to the 2nd July 2015. Places look scarce in the main areas though so if ye want to stay together you better think quick.

I had a strange experience last year regarding hotel rooms. I booked a triple room in November but between the gigs and the reels, the other two couldn't make it. The room was already paid for but I suggested to the receptionist when I arrived at 1pm on the Friday, that, if there was anyone stuck for accommodation, I would be willing to move into a smaller room to allow them to sell the extra beds. I wasn't expecting any discount or anything but she wasn't interested. So I had a huge room to myself. Seemed a bit of a waste.

I had a hotel booked (won't say which one) myself in January of last year through booking.com so no upfront payment. The hotel rang me about 3 weeks before the day and were looking for payment in full.

I refused and heard nothing more from them but was a bit annoyed and went looking for other rooms as I no longer wanted them to have my business. I wasn't particularly hopeful but I ended up getting a room for about 50 quid less and with breakfasts and an evening meal included. It's why I'm a bit surprised that everything is so booked up already.

I notice the hotel I initially had booked are now only offering payment up front rooms for that weekend for 2015.

... I'm a bit surprised that everything is so booked up already...
It's been said anecdotally that some hotels say that they are booked up when they aren't so that they can make rooms available much nearer the time and then charge a premium rate.
