Worth getting a replacement engine?

I have an 04 Mondeo with about 115,000 miles on it. It got a full service and NCT last month but the engine conked last week and is apparently beyond repair.

The mechanic says he has sourced a replacement engine for me, which would cost about €1,000 to buy and install. He says he doesn't like recommending this, as he doesn't know the party selling it and it only comes with a one month guarantee.

I bought the car for €4,000 about 5 years ago and it hasn't given me much trouble until now. Not really a scratch on it.

    My options seem to be:

    1. Scrap it for parts, which would probably get me a few hundred quid.
    2. Get the engine replaced and take the risk that it's not a dud
    3. Get the engine replaced and then trade it in for (hopefully) about €1,500 as soon as I can for a newer model

I'm thinking option 3? Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

The car owes you nothing. Say good bye and send her off to the scrappers. Petrol mondeos are not demanding much money these days so I dont personally see the logic in fixing her.
