For anybody who gave up cutting turf and applied for the Government compensation scheme.

Was talking to the people at the Dept of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht .. was wondering what happened to this years grant money.

Its delayed apparently awaiting sign-off. Has anybody got this years money paid ?

I am seriously suspicious if this was a bit of a con .. just to get us out of the bogs .. eg. they gave us the first years money (last summer) ..and then let us fcek off!!

Not involved in this but I'd go back cutting again if that was the case.

It would be cheaper to pay up the grant than pay EU fine.

Widespread turf-cutting in the SAC raised bogs this year, whether people have got the grant or not. People had years to prepare for the cessation of turfcutting on the remnants of the SAC raised bogs. Turfcutting illegal on only 2% of raised bogs in Ireland. No wonder the grant is late with the total disregard for this near extinct habitat.

With the widespread criminal damage being done to the Raised Bogs SAC's, the sooner the Government gets fined the better. They will have to do something then besides sending Gardaí to the bogs and watching people break the Law.

The big issue I think is that there is one rule for Bord na Mona (who is by far the biggest turf cutter in the country) and another for the little guys who are being thrown off bogs they have cut for years.
