PC Problems: Power Surge!

    Sup!
The power went in my area during the bad weather last week, and after it eventually came back I was aggrieved to find that when I attempted to power on my recent build, nothing was happening. It was off and plugged into a surge protecter when the power went, but after some quick research and a paperclip test on the non-functional PSU I thought all would be fine after ordering a new one, apparently these things happen so I didn't mind too much.

But installing the PSU has resulted in the same response from the lifeless shell that once was my PC! I was just wondering if any of ye have any further insight to aid my listless cause, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing. I suppose I've to order a new mobo now but if that doesn't solve the issue its getting a bit costly to re-buy the entire build! :(

Sorry to hear about your mishap, first thing would be to check all power connections again, do you have any LED's on the motherboard that are lit up when the PSU is live?

Next thing you could do is test each component in another rig one part at a time, RAM, HDD, GPU etc.

May sound dumb, but no harm check you have power at the 13A socket, and if you are reusing the same kettle lead make sure the 13A fuse is not blown.

Hey, yeah no LED's on the motherboard but I don't think it had them before anyway. I dunno what to check with the power, I tried chopping and changing and reducing them etc. with the new PSU but there doesn't seem to be anything that will power on thats not hooked into the mobo to begin with if ya get me, the cd drive wasn't opening when solely hooked into the PSU either tho, if that means anything.

Yeah gonna get a friends rig and try those 3 out, should be handy enough to check. I checked the old kettle lead and a new one in multiple sockets, seemed to be working fine by themselves.

Everything worked in another build anyway, so I went ahead and got the mobo and we're back online. Any recommendations for surge protection in future? Obviously the older one must be a waste of space!

I've used Belkin Surgemasters. Dunno how reliable they are, but the power has gone on me a few times, and nothing has died yet.
