I was looking at this http://www.decathlon.co.uk/500-high-visibility-waterproof-cycling-jacket-id_8221258.html

They don't deliver to the Republic so you just use parcel motel.

For the Irish winter there might not be that much use of a full on winter jacket. I have one and in 0 to +3 degrees it's too warm with just a thin short sleeve base layer underneath. The most useful in colder weather (at least for me) are thermal long sleeve jerseys. Generaly they have a bit more wind stopping power than short sleeve jerseys and are lined with some fleece like material. That plus a long sleeve base layer is generally fine down to around 0 degrees. If it's raining then a waterproof/resitant layer on top should be fine.

A couple of recent posts on the topic in the off topic thread here and here. In the market for one myself at the moment and trying to decide whether to go the thermal L/S jersey route of jacket route too.

My view on them is that it is essential that they have some waterproofing qualities. No point having a thermal jacket if it just soaks up the water.

Another thing I would always look for would be bright colours. Not getting into the high-vis debate but obviously with the shorter days I always think it best to opt for brighter colours

Castelli Mortirolo is perfect for Ireland. Spec'd for 8-14, but a decent base layer is all you need down to about 4 degrees.

id agree that a base layer under a normal jersey is adequate for most of the winter (supplemented by arm warmers and a decent gilet).

ive a craft soft shell winter jersey that only gets used when its really frigid or when im taking a leisurley 30 mins in the park or around town.

benefits of a base layer is that you can generally ride in warm weather without overheating. if it gets cold, just put on the gilet.

just used the castelli velo gilet yesterday and i can say its very nice. it was a bit warm with the base layer before i put it on, but it added no extra sweat factor whilst blocking some rain/wind very nicely.

I have an older version of this:
    http://en.bicycle-line.com/catalogo/winter-cycling-clothing/man/winter-jackets-and-jerseys/winter-jacket-lode-blue.html

Its an excellent jacket in that although it will let in water eventually, it keeps you warm but not too warm. i would wear a s/s base layer under it.

Note the iPod jacket for listening to music (but thats a whole other debate! :D )

My Endura Roubaix arrived a few days ago, overall I'm very happy with it. Would like if it was a little warmer, and it's not going to keep water out, but it's excellent for a packable jacket at that price. If it's a really cold or wet day, you'll want to wear at least 2 layers with it.

I have an Endura water proof jacket that keeps me warm and dry. It has zipped vents under the arms and a really good pocket in rear. The neck has some fleeced lining with is also really good and it has a water proof pocket for a phone. I usually just need it and an Under Armour shirt and never cold (or wet). Cost about €70.

I have the gilet version of this. Top quality material. Handy chest pocket. Good close fit. This is very reasonably priced and you're supporting local/Irish.

I'm 172.5cm/5ft8 30 waist and I wear it in a size S. Hag got a size M but it was too loose around the chest.
