Mahogony stain

Hi I am fitting NDF panels on my wall at moment and would like to make it look like mahogany. I guess all I can do is use wood stain , but I am open to suggestions. If I have to use stain can anyone recommend hat I should use as base coat as I guess stain wont go onto NDF directly. Thanking You

Cream oil paint should be alright.
