Golden Media Triplex - network issues

Fado, fado I bought a GM Triplex (Amiko Alien in other clothes), but for a number of reasons never quite got around to setting it up properly. As such, it's pretty much the same as it was when it came out of the box in early-ish 2013. No new images, no plugins, nothing. According to the system information it's runing 1.2.63.

One of the problems I had at the start was that the networking was a bit sketchy. There seemed to be some issues with DHCP so I configured a static address. I could browse to the internet from it. so the IP end of things was definitely working.

One of the problems at the time was that upgrade over the network was never presented as an option & at the same time when I clicked on Menu.Spark it wouldn't log in to whatever it was supposed to log in to. It would come back with "net error" and then present a menu with "upgrade" greyed out.

I've just unearthed the box again and want to get it updated, but I'm still facing the same problems.

Can anyone point me at a straight forward way to upgrade the box to the latest firmware and/or image? I've tried following the links in this forum, but none of them are playing out correctly for me. One of them mentions downgrading to 1.2.52 (or something similar), but I don't have a downgrade option, another one says to use menu.network, and I don't have that either.

Is there something I can load up onto my USB key, stick it in, boot it up and have it blow away anything & everything on the box and just upgrade it?

    Thanks,

    z

[edit] sorry, title should be network & upgrade issues, but I can't edit it.
