How long does a car battery generally last?

I think 4-5 years is considered good under normal circumstances.

I know some batteries that have lasted upwards of 8 years but 4 would be normal. Too many variables at play to say generally.

I would always hope to get 4-5 years "normal" use. I have had them fail at 2 years. My current car has an AGM battery installed since build in late 2006, showing signs of weakness though.

Remember regularly completely flattening a normal lead acid car battery will reduce it's life considerably, most of the time this will not be occurring but say if you use it to power a 12V motor for a boat....
