Golf Clubs in Ireland - How are they doing?

This came up at work lately with someone who was tryng to do a report on the golf industry in Ireland. They simply came up against a brick wall when it came to getting any generic, industry-level information beyond the number of clubs in operation and an estimate on playing numbers.

However, they were looking to find out what level of profitability there was across the industry and how clubs make it work. How many clubs have closed (or even opened!) in the past two years, and do people think we're "over golfed" in Ireland.

Official figures are very hard to come across and even playing numbers seem to be a number of years old.

Now, I'm conscious of not infringing any mod rules here, so please don't think I'm looking for a heated debate on how well Club A is doing against club B, but we're supposedly on the other side of a recession that has wreacked havoc on this industry, so it would be interesting to see what people think, at a macro level, about how the industry is performing...
