Would a person who is doing the exact same job as me be getting much more money than me? Granted they could be with the same company for more than 10 years..I have worked in offices for banks and often wondered about this.

Banks often operate pay scales, so it's possible that the senior person might be at the top of the scale.

Yes, a younger person could also be getting more money. It depends on all sorts of things: experience, skill, negotiation skills, supply and demand at hiring time, etc.

From my own experience, I joined a large Multinational 2 years ago, a Company that could afford to pay it's staff well. I worked with a lad who joined the same Company in 2001. Despite all that and doing the same job, he was one grade higher than me and I earned nearly €10,000 more than him per year.

So the answer is yes, a more junior employee 'could' be earning more than you based on numerous factors, some outlined by the previous poster.

I graduate this year and started a job in a large multinational head office, yet we have a small team in head office of 30. The guy who I took over from was almost twice my age and I believe he was earning 8k more, yet he had a lot less responsibilities. Since I started and was somewhat in the dark, alot of others repsonsibilities have been offloaded onto me (something which I will have to negotiate)
