Renewing Learner Permit 3rd Time

Hi guys, so basically I got my first leaner permit back when I was in Transition Year and my 2nd one expired in 2013. I now finally am getting back around to learning to drive and need to know what the best way of applying for a licence again is. I read somewhere that you can get a renewal if you can show proof of having booked a test? Would it be cheaper to just book a test and then cancel it and get my new licence or do I have to start all over again?

    Thanks

No, you don't have to start all over again. Yes, you do have to show an intention of sitting your test before you can get your third learner permit. When you book the test, you will be given a confirmation number. You quote that confirmation number when you are applying for your new learner permit. You don't have to actually sit the driving test, you can defer it until a later date.

If you got your first learner permit before April 4th, 2011, you do not have to do 12 mandatory EDT lessons with an RSA approved instructor. If you got your first permit after April 4th, 2011, then you do have to do the 12 lessons.

Btw, how many times have you renewed your learner permit over all? The title of your post says that you are renewing for the third time. But if you have only ever had two learner permits, than you have only renewed it once, right?

Great thanks for the reply that clears up a lot!

Sorry yeah I didn't make that very clear, I've only renewed it once before.

One more thing I was just looking at the RSA website there, it says you need a current valid driver number to book your test? I'm not sure what this is, where would I find it?

Your driver number should be on your old expired learner permit. It will also be written in your log book, if you ever got any official EDT lessons. If you can't find the old permit, give the RSA a ring and they will tell you what your driver number is. Failing that, you can still book a driving test using your PPS number.
