Yes. But one that most be placed in context and not alone for religious reasons. Today is a 24x7 always on society. There is constant need to be contactable and to hit the ground running during official work hours. Suveys (AFAIR) have shown that the time work has been gradually increasing. Thus setting aside a piece of time to recharge mentally, spiritually and to be with the family is even more needed. Therefore is wrong for there not to be expected to have some time set aside for the community at large outside the demands of business and industry.

I often refer to gotquestions.org on topics like this for some sort of biblically reasoned answer

    hope this helps..

While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation. They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him. And the Lord said to Moses, “The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses.

    Obviously it is wrong.

So there you are. If you are a Jew, and if you have a time machine to go back to centuries before Christ, then gathering sticks on a Saturday is wrong (and probably bad for your health).

Six days my work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

Ye shall ... keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD.

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.

You can twist scripture to suit you if you want, but you are not Christian if you don't believe in the truth of the bible.

So what is a Christian to do if they have a job which requires Sunday shifts? I would have thought once you still attend mass you are okay.

If it was me I'd quit. Working on the Sabbath, like might absolutely no difference to people in this world, but in the next world it's a different story.

Count yourself lucky. You'll go to hell if you work on a Sunday nowadays but in the time of Jesus you'd go to hell AND be killed or exiled in your earthly life.

Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you ... for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

Exodus 31:14-15 and 35:2, as well as Numbers 15:32-36 tell us to kill anyone that works on the Sabbath.

Sure even an atheist can go to mass.

Mod: Not again. Take it to the Bible, Creationism and Prophecy thread if you want to discuss the Bible without trolling. Don't post on this thread again.

That is a lot of jobs and professions that are unsuitable for Christians if that is the case! Many jobs within hospitals, policing, prisons, restaurants, airlines and other public transport to name just a few for starters!

Just being pedantic, but isn't the Sabbath Saturday?

keeping the sabbath is an old testament rule

like not eating pork or Prawns and circumcision.

I do believe it says That "all things are permissible" though not beneficial in the NT

I have a choice...... work Sunday shifts (usually 1 in 3) or let my kids starve.

I'd PREFER not to work Sundays, but i need to

In the Christian week, Sunday is the day especially dedicated to God and is to be marked by prayer and rest.

Many services are essential and need to be operated on a 24/7 basis but a Christian should try to refrain from unnecessary work where possible in order to maintain the Christian sabbath.

I think that the Sabbath is one of the ways God cares for us as our Father. "Sabbath was made for man, not man for Sabbath". In modern terms, God is saying that we need a balanced lifestyle. We work to provide for our needs, and those of our families. But we also need leisure time, a day to spend with those we love, to catch up on rest, to reflect on our lives. And to worship the God who created us. Obviously, there are essential services that need to be kept going. But I would like to think that those people who HAVE to work on Sunday can take their day of rest on another day during the week.

As to the whole shopping centre thing, I have no idea. It may well be that the only chance people get to go shopping is on a Sunday. But is that what is meant by spending quality time with family? I really don't know.

It's my understanding that it's okay to work on the Sabbath only if it serves the greater good, or for the preservation of one's life / the lives of others, and isn't borne out of baseness or self-interest. The work that may be entailed in religious and spiritual matters is also acceptable.

"11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

    Matt 12

culturally the people of this time worked incredibly hard. Most of it was on the land and by hand. It was demanding and exhausting work which no doubt would take an incredible toll on any person. To be told that 'god' had given you a day off would be great news indeed. You'd be grateful of that.

In todays world we are technologically emergent and our working practices have evolved to suit our environment. Our free time is massively more than in yesteryear. People have been working on Sundays for years and years and God has not wiped the planet out. Surely a sign that its really not that much of a big deal?

The idea that picking up a few sticks on Sunday carries a death sentence is abhorrent. From the perspective of a loving caring God it makes no sense whatsoever. Why not provide an information leaflet and help this person through education? Wouldn't that be a very small gesture of intelligence and compassion.

From the perspective of a ruling class that probably used religion to exert absolute control through fear it makes perfect sense. Even the most stupid person can pick up a rock and kill someone. It takes years of education and nurturing to get that person to create and contribute positively to society. A much harder road to travel.

I think Jesus' point was that essential work and good things could be done on the Sabbath and that the strict interpretation of the Sabbath by the religious authorities was wrong. I'm not sure he meant shopping in Tesco's... :-)

The difference is that Muslims don't interpret or contextualise the Qur'an, while most Christians interpret and contextualise the Bible.
