myself and the wife are looking at MPVs at the moment and most of them seem to be diesels... for example we really like the Ford C max but most post 2010s are nearly all diesel... She has a 5km commute each way to work so are we mad even thinking about just going for a diesel?... I know there are dpf issues with them but we would do a journey up the motorway once every 2 weeks to visit parents...
I just cant seem to find anything we both like in a petrol car and she is now generally wanting something MPV like with the flat boot... something post 09 with reasonable mileage

    opinions?

The predicted annual mileage sounds too low to justify buying a diesel.

Will this car be the only car in the household? I ask because it seems strange to use an MPV for a daily commute when only one person (?) will be in the car.

Fair enough. So this car will be the only car in the household? Whether or not the car will be your only car, I'm not sure that there's value in moving to a MPV for one child. If you get to three or four children, an MPV starts to make sense. There are plenty of practical smaller cars on the market that should meet your needs for the next few years.

Personally, I think a MPV for one child is bit of an overkill. Plenty of large size family hatchbacks like the Mondeo will easily accommodate a buggy.

no i have a car but well be fitting car seats to this car, we're looking for something that we can keep for a long time and has plenty of room if the family expands more... The C max we test drove didnt seem like it was going to be way too big for our needs and i understand what your saying about MPVs... some of them are quite big..

if engine sizes are the same in petrol and diesel i would go for the diesel
tax will be the same and the fact mpg difference will be huge between the two.
buy a petrol is a waste plus re sale will be pennys

The OP is looking at post 2010 cars so motor tax will be co2 based so could vary between petrol and diesel.

Also the OP states that he plans to keep the car for along time so resale value becomes less of an issue. This means the petrol will be cheaper to buy initially, fuel savings are less important when doing such low mileage. People need to do a bit of maths before just buying into the headline savings at the pump.

The OP's biggest problem will be the limited choice in petrol models available to him and may well indeed be forced into buying a diesel despite not actually having proper use for one
