According to response from CSO the figures don't include cars declared as off the road so the 2013 change for motor taxation isn't having an impact here.

Could it not be the other way around? That there were many vehicles languishing away in sheds that finally got registered in advance of the new legislation?

I'd find it hard to believe there are all of a sudden 12000 more vintage cars on the road, where would they even have come from? I think we'd have noticed them out and about no?

No, it is a measure of tax discs, not statuatory off road declaration.
Those cars still wouldn't have a tax disc.

I got that, what I meant people with an old shed in the shed figuring, ah sure for the sake of 56 quid a year I'd rather not have the hassle. I have one myself like that and I doubt I'm the only one?

Accepted but I doubt that counts for more than 10% of the increase.

No idea what that means BTW, just thought it was an interesting coincidence considering the figures are way off... :D

That seems odd. That's an awful lot of vintage Mercs and Pugs.

well based on those two numbers the figures must be way off, as with the 12,000 increase from '12 -'13.

I SORD'd 3 cars that had been not taxed for decades and were not previously on the system...old 40's and 50's cars, these cars are now on the tax office computer as diesels and the engine capacity is '1'.
I think they just slapped anything down.

I wonder how robust the CSO figures are? (Given that the UK's DVLA released statistics for old vehicles can be quite flaky)

    Hi XXXX,

The bulletin is based on the number of vehicles under current taxation/licence at 31st December 2013. This has always been the procedure used. It does not include vehicles which were declared off the road.

    Kind Regards
    XXXXX
    Data Services
They say they are not included.

I'm not buying this. Whilst there's a claim from the CSO/DTTAS (or whatever dept) that it doesn't include SORD'd vehicles, it must included something like it as there's no real explanation for the massive increase. SORD'd vehicles get a motor tax reminder spewed out. There's definitely some double-counting going on and here's why:

Looking back over previous years figures the last set are so off the scale, it merits treble checking them as there doesn't seem to be any sightings of these invisible vehicles.

Looking at the trend, it has been downward in the last 3 years. If it continued downward to 2.1%, that would only be 595 more vehicles than last year. If it was the same at 4.2%, then it would only be 1190 more to the pool. If the increase matched the highest year of 20.35%, that would still only be 5766 more vehicles. If it was the average increase between 2001-2012 of 14.78%, that would be 4008 vehicles. Going by total numbers of vehicles registrations I would have expected the proportion to be 1.2-1.3% of the total vehicle parc and be 1500 min - 4000 max more.

An increase of 12654 my arse!
