    Hi All,

I'm a male 36 years old looking for a first car.

I have a budget of around 8k and would be doing 600km per week of a commute so would probably be looking at a diesel.

What suggestions would you make? Lots of power isn't really needed, i'd take reliability over it for the moment!

Thanks in advance for any replies!

OP, as it's your first car I suggest getting some insurance quotes first on the examples MM suggested. In most cases your choice in cars could be determined by what is affordable for you to insure.

Do you need a medium or big car?
Will it mostly be yourself in the car or will there be kids, passengers?

If just yourself, what about a smaller car, like a diesel Fiesta, VW Polo or Renault Clio? All very popular so plenty out there to choose from. Plus, would be cheaper to insure as a 1st car.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm budgeting around 1,000 to 1,250 for insurance but will definitely get a few quotes once I have a better idea of the model(s) I'm looking at.

Would mainly be myself in the car with passenger and kids at the weekend a possibility. Will take a look at the smaller cars too

    That's why I didn't suggest a 535d :pac:

I'd go for the Corolla as it's only a 1.4 and its probably the best built and most reliable of those 4.

If you need something bigger, i'd look at an Avensis or Octavia. Lot of them will be ex-taxi's though so be warned.

Do you have a full driving licence? If not, insurance will be rough for that level of annual mileage, especially if you go for a premium or luxury car.

Agree that diesel would be the best option for the mileage you mention. Presumably, the mileage will be mixed driving and regular long journeys rather than mainly urban driving on trunk roads or stop/start driving in towns or cities?

You mention reliability as being important to you. That sort of means that certain Asian brands will need to be top of your list. That said, many would argue that most of the Asian brands are stronger on petrol and hybrids cars than they are on diesel cars. Many European brands, especially German ones, are strong on diesel.

You don't seem to have bias for or against any particular brands. Two suggestions:
    • A Skoda diesel
    • A Toyota diesel

This car chooser might also be of use:

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Yeah, I have a full license but only for the last 3 months so no NCB and am expecting the insurance to hurt my pocket a bit anyway.

The driving would be mainly on motorway with a very small percentage of city driving (less than 10%) so as you said, diesel seems to be the way to go.

Will definitely take note of Skoda and Toyota diesels

Them pictures are taken in what looks to be the same spot a dealer in North Dublin takes their pictures. Can't for the life of me remember the name of the dealer, but buying a car on UK plates, especially from where a dealer operates (possibly operated) would have me suspicious

You can see the reg, so a UK history check would be worth it if you like it.

That engine is one of the most hateful things I have ever encountered.

if reliability is top priority then get the corolla. the 1.4 d4d is one of the most reliable engines out there, its also superbly refined, the most refined small diesel engines imo

Even 10 years on today, it still holds up well refinement wise.
