Well, in fairness, we're claiming Dan Martin as Irish. We're as bad as they are.

How does this team rate in comparison to let's say the an post team?

Well that Belgian team An Post used to field New Zealander Shane Archbold as well as Belgian born Sam Bennett - they have both now defected to Germany though ....

I'm only glad he won't have to work with Sean Yates, he seems to be off with Bobby Julich to Team Tinkoff Skyski-lite

Yates for all his issues with doping (equivocal attitude FTR and in keeping with boards guidelines) is a superb tactician and motivator.
He also has reams of experience over an 35 years period.

the documentary on Wiggins tour win painted yates in a very positive light in terms of one of the reasons why he won. i wonder whats yates opinion on armstrong and co?

Ueseless information time, but seeing as we are discussing one of our most successful juniors ever, the same Mr Yates competed in the first ever Junior Tour of Ireland [1978].Won by a certain Martin Early.

That's a very revealing interview - the Charleville 2-Day was his preparation race for the World Champs!!! -

'I felt I didn’t have the racing in my legs in the build up to the event and that’s what I was lacking. The Charleville two day is a great race but its not ideal preparation for racing the best guys in the world. I had looked at going to France to ride a number of races but it was just too expensive,'

I think it's possible that CI's junior HP budget ran out. The Trofeo Karlsberg was a late addition to the programme and was done with only 2 team officials. In the previous Nations Cup race in France, the team competed as the NRPT with Dunbar and O' Brien guesting.

O' Loughlin was the only rider who rode international races in the lead up to the worlds, spending 11 days in France and racing 4 times. AC Bisontine provided the accommodation and team support, but the flights and food costs were paid by his parents. It was no surprise that he performed best at the Worlds. He also took a two month break from racing to do his Leaving Cert, so was possibly fresher at the end of the season.

But when you look further as to why the budget possibly ran out, you see two European Championship track medals (Downey and Knight). So the money wasn't wasted. CI is a small organisation running multiple programmes. They do a good job. There is no mandate from the membership to go into the red financially. There will be some very interesting and hard decisions to be made as we approach the Rio Olympics and the building of a velodrome.

Best of luck to the lad. The Nfto team seem to have higher aspirations than the majority of crit focused uk teams.

Given how fickle the sport is I do hope that as well as training and racing that he prioritises an education for himself. The probability of making it to the very highest level is exceedingly small and cycling is a precarious enough profession. He could have a chat with someone like Matt Brammier and find out what life as a pro is like.

Wish I could double like ROk ON's post. The safest bet is that any super talented Irish rider will never make it as a Pro. that's the reality of cycling.

Roche and Kimmage both had trades and Kelly was serving his time.

To me Roger Hammond had the ideal prep. raced as a junior in every bracnch of the sport, was junior cyclocross champion. eased back for a few ears and completed a degree in engineering then went full time and became a pro for a small team and worked his way up to end as respected (and clean) pro with a decent palmares.

It was on Eurosport right after PR, the commentators took a while to figure out who Eddie was.

He was incredible on that climb. He was like a rocket, really impressive stuff.

6th in both Stages . 4th overall. Will be interesting to see how he gets on in Europe in the NCups this week.

For sure Eddie Dunbar is amazing talent. He's made an enormous leap from junior cyclist to pro cyclist in a couple of short months. He has made that transition successfully, and is he's now ripping the legs off the Uk's best cyclists.. Go Eddie...

Currently 2nd in the elite series rankings.

That was 70km gone - he attacked at 42km gone - 80 km now left - trying to find the parcours map to see the profile I know it's hilly enough so it might suit him.

Would have to agree with the above. Timing of the break is everything. Seems like he went far too early. Great effort though. I'd imagine over time the British cyclist media will try to claim him as there own :p

Is he nervous? I think the Irish need a top 30 finish to qualify for u23 worlds

Or is he ambitious? Spending the whole day up the road showing off the engine won't do his reputation any harm.

Nor would a top three placing do his reputation any harm and Ireland would have some points as well. It was an exceptional ride especially the fact that he still finished with the leading group after riding alone for so long.
