This probably sounds stupid, but does anyone track their animals with GPS or other tracking software. It would be handy for sheep and cattle on unclosed commonages

There was a programme on last night where they put GPS trackers on cats to track their movements. It was very interesting how different cats had their own areas.
It sounds like a useful idea for cattle/sheep on commonages but I'd imagine it's very expensive.

It's an interesting idea.It should be sufficient just to track one or two animals in the group. A Google search brings back loads of cat/dog versions. Battery life seems to be a problem but some promise up to a month. I suppose you could track a quiet animal and possibly change battery while it's distracted by a bucket of nuts. I'd be tempted to give one a try if annual running costs (SIM data plan) came in at less than 100 euros

Teagasc did it at the then research farm in Leenane. They were monitoring the grazing patterns of sheep on the hill. All I can remember of it now was one ewe had broken into a silage aftermath field and she spent the next three weeks patrolling outside the fence of that field for a way back in, all represented graphically for us with her own specific tracking route colour.
