Surely his recent bad form before his injury is mainly to blame?

He clearly was a great cyclist when he was in form. He was a young man (still 21) when he came second in the Giro and won the white jersey three times in the Tour.

Someone on here was saying last week that none of the current GT winners could also do well on the classics - Andy won LBL and always targeted the Ardennes classics.

It's a sad way for him to finish his career at 29. I hope he finds a role elsewhere in cycling.

Sad to see. A young man at 29 should be at the peak of his career.
Typifies all that was/is wrong with cycling on many levels.
Hope he finds a role in life that makes him and his family happy.

What do you think it "typifies"? Just curious.

To me he's just has a series of terrible knee injuries, unfortunate.

Shame to see him go. I wonder about the knee injury being the real reason. Things really seemed to go downhill when team Leopard started. Still he's a GT winner and could/should have won the TdF a second time.

It'll be interesting to see how Frank goes now.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not...

hmmm, really? The comments on the cyclingnews article make for interesting reading. Wouldn't want to repeat them here.

He really went down-hill after his brother got caught for doping. Maybe it was the loss of the training partner and it certainly must have been demoralising.

I guessed that Frank got a ride at Trek because of Andy, if so this is bad news for Frank too.

    I beg to differ.
