Jaguar XF must be worth a look if comfort is a priority.

    Volvo s80

Unless you went down the line of a rangerover... but even i consider a rangerover less comfortable than an s80

Try out a Skoda Superb Elegance
It will depreciate less than the S80

I drive that exact car got it new last Nov have to say love it great power a lot of leg room but tbh the seats are no where near as comfortable as the S80

All the flagships are the most comfortable, LS460, A8, S-class & 7 series.

A model down, the Citroen C6 is a seriously comfortable (and cool imo) car. But you'd need to go to the UK for one. VRT on a 2007, from the start of next year is under 2k, so worth considering.

    Hard to top the Volvo.

We've had 3 and all have been supremely comfortable. The S80 even moreso.

Nope, nor carzone either. They're a rare beast on these shores.

There's a few in the UK, and as they're not exactly a big seller, you'd get a serious deal on one over there.

You'd want to be seriously brave with the C6 depreciation wise!
    Awesome car all the same

Did they really put a 1.6 diesel engine in a car as big and heavy as a Volvo S80?
This would be the PSA 1.6 hdi/tdci engine I presume?

Also, when I think of S80s I think of Mary Harney, she loved her S80s, that/s why I'd never buy a D reg S80. :-P

The 1.6d in the S80 is adequate but given your healthy budget the 2.0d or D5 are much nicer and more befitting the flagship Volvo.

Volvo S80, Merc E-Class (you'd need one with upgraded seats, standard ones are just OK), and Lexus GS450h are probably the 3 best for comfort in that class.
Or as said, move up a level. S-Class, but a dearer car to run!

I had never heard of a C6 before, so went and took a look on Autotrader.

I'd say an acquired taste, styling wise.

I like it. Wouldn't wan't to be the first owner mind, depreciation straight down a cliff face, but secondhand bargain.

Think the tax post-2008 is something like €2300, so, ouch.

    Edit: Yup, €2350 :(http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=89118839&postcount=53

    In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Vel_Satis:
"Reviews of the car were critical of its ride and its handling but noted the car was quiet under most conditions."

Of the cars discussed so far only the C6 and an S class definitely meet OP's requirements. If budget was much, much higher, a Rolls-Royce (especially one from the last 10-12 years) or maybe a Bentley might be the obvious choices.

About 10 years ago, Top Gear showed the C6's abilities when the car was used to film a horse race. The S class is primarily designed to transport passengers comfortably and Mercedes really understands that segment of the market very well.

The op's only requirements were comfort and around 20,000 euro. I'd imagine all the cars suggested fill these requirements unless you know something i don't.

Apart from C6 and S class, none of the cars mentioned (Jaguar XF, various Volvo and Lexus models, and so on) were designed or engineered for more than average passenger comfort.

Just because they're all more soft and compliant than, say, a sports car or a BMW with runflat tyres and sport suspension does not put them into the same league as the C6 or the S class.

If you haven't seen the Top Gear test of the C6, I suggest that you take a look. The S class remain the default choice for chauffeuring people and almost every new car review (over a long period) talks about the car's ride and comfort, so its credentials in this discussion are impeccable.

Don't see how a car that costs nearly €2500 every year for road tax can be classed as a bargain, no matter what it costs to buy.
