There's good and bad in every breed, not much point in me praising them.

Using the breed here since the eighties and breeding them since 1998,
They're easy lambed and have good wool when they're born, they seem to suit us here,
Have a look at post 504 in the sheep photo thread

Will preface this post with a health warning there is huge variations in all breeds and I am not being anti any breed just recounting my experience.

changed from charollais to vendeen several years ago for april lambing kerry hill cross ewes. have had four rams in that time and happy enough though the last ram I bought produces very lean lambs that are hard finished.
lambs are easily born ,hardy and great to get up and suck, take cold wet north westerlies better than the charollais,
and in my experience appear more resistant to worms/cocci (cleaner tails) and have not had headfly problems which would have struck 3-4% charollais ram lambs. Vendeens are not as wild as charollais either.

all that said in a early intensive system a good charollais on suffolkX ewes produces great lambs

I was going to buy one this year for crossing on ewe lambs and early lambing (late jan) but was put off by what I heard of late maturing which went against the principle of eaarlish lambs , went for HD in the end

Vendeen are poor on milk, but good at lambing .
    Known to have feet problems

Always warn customers here not to use them to breed replacement ewes, strictly a terminal sire, you could ne lucky, some lines are milky

Rangler have you ever put a vendeen ram to ewe lambs... my ewe lambs are every sort of cross. However I was just wondering will I have issues or things to look out for when lambing. ...

We lamb 100 ewe lambs here to vendeen every year, don't get much hassle with them, we'd always scan them and feed the doubles well and not over feed the singles.
Ewe lambs are average 45 kgs at the moment, Rams will be going with them 10th november

Great terminal sire as they say. Hardy little buggers when they are born. They want to live. Grow well. Finish easily and kill out and grade similar to Charolais. No more lameness than any other. Only drawback is every thing has to go for slaughter. Big premium for texel and Suffolk cross ewe lambs this year.

I bought one pure bred last year have him with a mix of cross bred ewes found him easy to lamb hardy and great growth rate had texel and Suffolk rams before find the vendeen miles ahead them and I based in west mayo to so not that I had green fields a plenty
