    Hi all,

    Thinking of planning a trip to Germany to do some shooting. Boar mostly possibly deer... What's the story with gaining a licence over there? I have a full bore irish license at the moment. Is it possible to rent a rifle as opposed to bringing one on a plane? Any helpful advice or experience is welcome

    Need to apply for a temp German hunting license ~ 200 Euro. HCAP or similar needed.
    Once you have that you only need to get it filled in again if you go again ~100 Euro.
    In our case the fella who invited us did the paper work.
    Check if your insurance is up to scratch, not sure if NARGC is sufficient or accepted.

    EU firearms pass,Irish liscense,proof of insurance that is coverd in the EU.CAI,CSI covers that
    Invitation to shoot being the most important and proof of " hunting competence". Seeing as we dont have such here and get our hunting liscenses with our gun liscenses,you would be more than coverd with HCAP.

    Renting a rifle,meh!! Do you really want to trust yourself to a strange rifle when hunting the last of Europe's dangerous game? If it is under.308 you WILL need to organise something bigger over there,as anything under .308 is prohibited for boar.
    Flying with the gun isnt that much of a PITH IF you plan it right.My tips are;

    1] Avoid the UK for obvious reasons with their paranoid views on firearms at customs at airports.

    2] Avoid KLM and Schipol too.More for them losing your gun for 24 hours and needing extra paperwork from Dutch customs to clear it thru,and the firearms dept in the Dutch customs havent figured out the inter web yet,they are still working off a FAX!!:eek:

    3] Fly Lufthansa from Dublin to wherever in Germany.They treat it as a normal day to day affair that needs to be treated with a little more attention than a bag of somones knickers!:) Give them the gun in Dublin,it arrives the other end in Germany and is escorted with you to the Zoll[customs] .A quick and efficent look at the EU firearms passport,gun serial numbers, your passport and you are done.You 'll get an armed police escort on the way back to Ireland when you are dropping the gun off at oversize luggage in Germany .:p:D At least I do every time I travel with mine.:)
    Costs abit more but well worth the service and efficency.
    Make double damn sure you have a very sturdy gun case[Pelibox type] and it is double lockable,and olny YOU have the keys.

    4] Forget the el cheapo airlines ..Most wont handle firearms.[Ryanair especially:mad:]
