Commute from The Curragh, Newbridge to Cork City 3 days a week?

Would I be mad to commute this distance for my dream job? What do people think as I'm not willing to move to cork?

    Thanks :-)

Yes, it would be utterly silly to do that kind of commute.

The train might work, don't know the Dub-Cork services that well, what your start/end times would be, where you live, where in Cork the workplace is.

Car is an option but it's minimum 2 hours each way, most likely a lot more than that. Either in fuel or fares the cost would rival renting an apartment.

Your quality of life would be severely impacted in any case.

I can spell it out for you, albeit bluntly, what your choices are.

    1) Give up on the dream job. Since this is not the USA in the 1950s, that's probably not such a good idea.

    2) Spend a fortune and a good chunk of your life commuting.

    3) Rent a "crash pad" e.g. a room in a shared house for the 3 nights before each work day.

Talk to some B&Bs in the area as well, see if you can strike a deal with them.

If it was for a 5 day a week job then definitely not but for 3 days it may be tolerable.

It would depend on where in Cork and what times, if it is easily accessible from the M8 and if you are going to get caught in rush hour traffic either way.

If it is an easy location to reach from the M8 then you are looking at around 2 hours each way. 12 hours a week commuting is a lot but far from unusual, there are plenty of people commuting 1h30 or more each way by car in solid city traffic which I would find far more unpleasant than a long motorway drive.

It also depends on your other circumstances, if this 3 day week job is your full employment and you have the other 4 free then it would be much more viable long term than if you were also working another job to keep up with the bills.

As you said it is your dream job it may be worth the sacrifice of a long commute if it is something you really want. If the commute is the only thing holding you back then there are options, if the work days are consecutive then you always have the option of renting a room, BnB or even hotel room for 2 nights a week, it is going to cost you €40 direct costs (fuel+tolls) as well as wear+tear on the car per day return so saving that will pay for accommodation.

It's a tough decision really. It is costly and it's a lot of time in the car.
3 days a week I think I may manage but for how long before I get sick of it I don't know.

The job is shift work in emergency services..... So it's a mix of morning and night commutes

It's very do-able. We do something similar ourselves but much further. Dublin - West Cork. If you could start on a late shift, stay in a b&b for the two nights and then and finish on an early shift. The cost of the b&b would be the same as the diese/petrol/2 tolls and if it's the same two nights each week, lots of b&bs would be delighted to do a deal with you. Even if you would prefer not to stay, it's a good road to travel - motorway all the way. If it's your dream job and only for three days a week, go for it. You will be much happier on your days off. You could get a job closer to home and be miserable. Go for it! Best of luck....:)

Night commute of that distance is hell, and sadly you will get caught with snow/ice in winter as you'll be travelling through a part of the country thats a few degrees colder than the coast.
