Underfloor heating

Hi all, quick question regards underfloor heating, myself and OH are intending renovating an old house down the line,

Question is could we put in the internal piping layout with the intention of not making the system operational for a year or two?

It's basically due to budget constraints, we'd like the option of doing the external piping in a few years with the internal piping put in place when we are redoing the floors.

    Any advice greatly appreciated?

an old house suggests a lack of insulation and definitely insulation continuity. Have someone who can run heat loss calcs on the proposed ufh?

Hi Brian, Thanks, we haven't had anyone run heat loss calcs on the proposed ufh.

We are not actually sure if it's a runner yet. We were discussing amongst ourselves and just wondering if it's possible to fit the underfloor pipe network, pressure test it, close it off and down the line connect external geothermal network and required pumps regulators etc to it.

Just wondering if it is something that anyone has seen done.

Not that well up on heat loss calcs, thanks for the pointer, it might rule out the entire system

I see no major problem installing an ufh system, capping it and connecting gshp later. My point re heat loss is unless you've got modern levels (continuos) of insulation with no cold bridges this ufh system may very well cost you more than a conventional heating system. Don't get me wrong I'm pro ufh especially when it suits many renewable heating type systems but not if it's poorly designed/ unsuitable install. A 'Fabric first' approach is always best. Picture yourself after spending 15k between ufh & gshp and finding that the system doesn't hold it's heat.. I've visited several clients with ufh where a lack of insulation has had this result.

    Thanks Bryan, that makes sense.

One other question for anyone in the know, does it work ok having underfloor heating in a room where there is also a heat source for eg a stove?

As in draughts etc, thought I heard somewhere before that rads and ufh can cause problems, so just wondering if it is the same for ufh and stoves?
