Wedding venues midlands

Hi all, currently looking for a wedding venue in the midlands, we will be getting married in offaly (Birr) but can travel for the right venue (up to hour and 20 minutes), any suggestions? Numbers are about 250 for Sept 2015 or May 2016. Currently we have looked at the County Arms, Glasson country house, and The Hodson Bay. County Arms and The Hodson Bay will hold 250 no problem and the food is meant to be good, Would 250 be too many in Glasson and does anyone know what the food is like?
Any suggestion for alternative venues would be much appreciated

I think Glasson could hold 250 as the dining room / ballroom were pretty big. Was there for wedding 18 months ago and the food was very good. The manager is very good and the whole operation was very slick and well run.

I prefer it there to the Hodson Bay as I think there are a lot more of the public wandering around the Hudson Bay whereas the wedding area is separate to the golf club in Glasson. Photos are fab in both. I had my wedding booked in Hudson many moons ago and cancelled it there as it was so dirty any time I went in but as I said that was a long time ago.

Glasson is very nice, the reception area was cool and the food was excellent too.

Stayed in the hodson bay for a conference two years ago and I thought it was very nice. Certainly not dirty.

Glasson can hold over 300. I saw a wedding held there recently with 310 I believe. The view over the lake is spectacular and the food is very good. The staff are good to deal with as well.

I was put off Hodson Bay for the following reasons:
No choice on wine, they do one Chilean red and one Chilean white and that's it. I was at a wedding there a few years ago and the wine was undrinkable - pretty much no one at our table drank the red. I put it to them that the Chilean red wasn't up to scratch but they wouldn't offer an alternative. You can of course pay corkage but that is hassle.
    No residents bar.
Red carpet entrance not very "special" in my view.
The ballroom is very nice and the food is good in fairness though.

I was at a wedding in Westmeath in Middleton park house, it was amazing. It's like something out of downton abbey and totally private. It's about an hour away from birr , mph.ie

Mph would never hold 250. 180-200 tops I would have said.

    Mullingar park hotel.

My parents were at a wedding recently in Glasson Golf Hotel for approx. that number and said that they thought the food wasn't as good, cold plates served and small main course portions. They also said the service wasn't great and that the servers didn't seem to be properly trained.

They have been to wedding in Glasson before and never had a compliant. Maybe it was an off-day.
