Can someone please explain to me the cheapest way to return a hire car with these people?

You're given a vehicle which is full but shall return it empty or with a refund for fuel left in less admin. charge?

    Why not full to full?

Your post is confusing - are they giving you a choice? The cheapest way to do it is to take the car full and return it full.

Make a note of the local filling stations when driving away from the airport or pickup point, call back there on the way when returning the car and fill it up. Take a photo of the fuel gauge (with the odometer reading visible) when you park the car on return.

sorry if I didn't explain properly. there is no link to this site where these terms apply.

Apparently you buy a full tank and return it as empty as you can. (I think)

Have a look at the fuel policy on ryanair rent a car and let me know what you think?

Yep, they've started this craic this year for certain countries. No idea why they think it's a good idea because it just isn't. Full to full always worked before and does for a lot of other rental companies. Can't see the logic in it.

Hertz were almost always my rental company of choice but not any more while they continue to operate this daft policy.

I do. They will be getting a present of a lot of free petrol left in tanks by customers who didn't return the car 100% empty. There will be some people who will be calculating exactly how much driving they will be doing before they return the car & exactly how much petrol they will need in the car. But there will be even more who couldn't be bothered, or who were afraid of running empty, so will return the car with petrol still in the tank. That all equals a lot of free petrol for Hertz.

Funny thing is this only applies to Ryanair Hertz car hire. Hertz.com operates a full to full policy.

OP did you get a reimbursement for unused fuel in the tank when you returned your card as stated in the T&Cs ?

"A reimbursement of unused fuel will be automatically applied to the costs of your rental upon return."
