    Hi,

I've managed to sell my diesel, so now I'm looking at a performance petrol. Insurance isn't an issue as I'm on a trade policy its just trying to pick a car,

I'd prefer for the engine size to be sub 2L as the tax is a joke in this country, STs are nice I just can't justify the premium on tax - I've been looking at an opc astra as they seem to be a lot of car for the money despite the torque steer (I'm not a rally driver) - any other suggestions in this kind of bracket? Sub 8k and reasonable tax,

    Cheers

How small a car would you go?

The difference between the 2 litre and 2.5 litre is €370 a year, that's just a shade over a €1 a day, if you find an ST in good condition you shouldn't rule it out, they usually go alot cheaper than a similar aged GTI.

You're probably looking at a pre motor tax change turbo.

    or the like.

I like hatchbacks and 2 seaters so size isn't really an issue, only thing is I'm 6ft 2 so roof needs to be reasonable

I know, but I've already stretched to 720 a year and that's where I'd like it to stay if I'm honest for something like tax that provides no return or benefit apart from being road legal

Not mad about A3s, car specs seem very attractive though

I have considered an S2000 before, it's definitely a contender alright - dc5 is a little bit too racer looking for my cup of tea,

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, any other ideas

Going from a diesel to a performance petrol, I would be more concerned with the fuel bills rather than tax bills TBH. But I'd still like to be in your position!:D

I'm definitely not into french cars but RenaultSport models offer a lot of bang per buck. Good luck with whatever you buy.

It's more of a hang up about spending extortionate money on a piece of paper with the tax I suppose! At least with fuel you get to enjoy the benefits of it
Also I don't do a lot of driving mainly to luas stop and back every day so won't be reeking the full benefits of the diesel premium

Renaultsport clios are very nice, but I don't see too many of the newer ones in the republic - not mad about the megane RS though think the back looks a bit funny

    Cheers

I was in a similar fortunate situation a few years back and bought an RX8. If you can stomach 17-20mpg they're a great car.

merc and audi sub 8k will have turbo and superchargers, so that will make up for the smaller cc...

Seconding the RX. Take the time to find a good one and look after it, it's a great car. And a unique driving experience that's only getting rarer.

For your budget, you could find a good one, and pay for a fresh engine to boot.

    Clio 197? Megane 225?

Audi S3 is a good shout.
