I have come across a good automatic merc petrol 2800cc ~1996 which has been written off from rear end crash so back end is totaled and I can get it cheap if i want it
I can also get cheap a 1992 merc 300 diesel with no engine gear box
Is it very hard to swop the 2.8 liter petrol engine and auto gearbox into the merc 300 meant for the 3 liter diesel .No info on this car was it auto box or manual

I know some will say diesel etc but I can generally fix petrols I cant do didly squat with diesels and I wouldn't use this car much so fuel MPG isnt the big factor .

If its way too much work will pass on it and wait for old 1996 era 280 with broken engine and gear box and swop that in instead

You could also go and buy a good big engined one for about 500 or 600 euro and save money and hassle .

putting a different engine in will require changine the wiring looms & ECU. Going from diesel to petrol will require changing loads more stuff too
if doing an engine change best sticking to the same engine as is being removed.

The 96 2800 isn't a w124, the older thing you are on about is, disaster of a job for someone who knows what they are at, for you Derry I reckon you'd have it done and dusted in half an hour :)

I have done similar fitting a 99 turbo diesel into a 90 w124 and it is simple enough but get the engine mounts for the model car you are fitting it to. As in e280 mounts if the 280 is a w124 engine going into a w210.

People say that is a tough one on a rhd 124, have you any more details, a td 124 with a few small mods would be a lovely car. Even the non turbo multivalves do nothing for me

Was told that as it wont fit in a RHD w124 but I did it with all original merc parts and it fits just right as I even got the intercooler in with minimal modification

how did you manage the gearbox and ecus?

Engine ecu was done away and an old school turbo pump fitted but I can fit the engine ecu if wanted with minimal modding but wasnt in the project brief. I have the 5 speed auto fitted with a stand alone system running the gearbox and it works well. Hope this is of help.

Thanks for that, an old mechanical pump (and injectors?) from an old 5 pot say?

Just the pump as some rextons use the pump and sprinters.... you can also tune the pump up and use an external alda to limit smoke when off boost

Thank you as it worked out well as it is quiet when driving so you dont hear the diesel and very handy on fuel as driving at a constant 100kmh it will return 53mpg. It is not the fastest thing in the world but is able to shift when needed but it is a nice wafting machine.

Decided to do project and suddenly the petrol merc owner refused to sell wanted to keep car until it was 30 years old and became classic.I think the bad lads in Dublin setting fire to his 1990 diesel Merc for yesterday night fun made him reluctant to sell

So end of project thanks guys nearly had it in the bag but then went for another project with another friend restore a 1950 fiat thing
