    Hi I'm look for a starter car . 1.4 petrol under 4,000.

Looking at a corolla and focus tomorrow. The dealer I'm going to also has an opel astra.

Are they any good ? Is there anything I should be aware of, that I should check out? They seem to be cheaper than other cars in their class.

What year is the astra I have experience of the engine going kaput in an 06 one and found it hard to get a replacement because apparently it's a common problem. There was no temperature gauge in it.

    Hi Dan

It won't let me post a link. 2 dealers have a selection of 2004, 2005 and 2006 for under 4000 . all with under around 90000 miles.

The Focus and Corolla are nicer cars by far compared to an Astra imo.

I don't think so. I found that Ashtray a nice car to drive but it does show up road noise noticeably.

had terrible trouble with astra.it was 01 thou and about 5 yrs old at the time..coil light kept coming on the dash and the car would just conk out.
left it in with loads of mechanics..blah blah coil pack blah...ended up spending 1,500 'fixing' it up only to push it into the garage i was trading it to a month later.

corolla then focus would be my pick.
    good luck with it op.

There seems to be a lot of Astras about and I didn't see much comment on here about them. Just thought I'd ask.

Had a 01 1.4 Astra up till 09. Had a habit of blocking the oil intake with a carbon like grit in the oil sump. Main dealers charged 700 to check it out first time in 04. After that I changed the oil and filter every 10k miles. Take down sump each time and it was coated with black crap. Head gasket went in 09. Fitted with second hand engine as mechanic felt replacement head gasket would go again. Crashed it later that year and written off. Bought a 1.8 Focus flexi fuel ( run on E85 or petrol). Fond of juice but a lovely car.

The astra your looking at is the astra h mk 5 2004 to 2009 so as not to confuse it with earlier models. As I said I have knowledge of an engine going in an 06 model and had lots of trouble finding a replacement. I spoke to several mechanics and they all said they are known for it and it was what they described as a soft engine. We eventually found an engine from an 08 model which to be fair has been fine. Now I'm no mechanic and only passing on what I was told. Hope this helps. I presume you're going to have a mechanic check out whichever car you decide to buy. Good luck with it.
