    it is no longer required by the FAA for US registered aircraft ,however british aircraft, it is a legal requirement to have the Registration of the aircraft on the underside of the wings. so I guess D reg aircraft are not required to have it under the wing .

    I don't recall ever seeing a German airliner with underwing registration.

    I thought that it was an ICAO requirement, therefore US aircraft operating in Europe will get violated for not having it:)

    It is - ICAO Annex 7:
    3.3.1 Wings. On heavier-than-air aircraft, the marks shall
    appear once on the lower surface of the wing structure

    The other day I saw a VP reg Russian plane with reg written in Times New Roman (or similar) font, although the convention also forbids ornamentation in registration. Apparently this annex is widely ignored.
