    Hoping for some info.

Taking the plunge and cancelling sky+, full package (3d, multiroom, hd, demand, sports & movies)

I'm kind of nervous doing this as I'm afraid we'll regret it/be lost without it. However, it's just no longer possible to pay their extortionate fees (140/month!?!)

Am looking into a box like this :4IFE Saorview Approved Terrestrial And Satellite Combi. At 99 euro it seems too good to be true.... I was hoping you could help with my many questions?

How much can I expect to pay for installation?

Can I use any of the boxes & dishes I have here from my current provider, or do these tend to be collected upon cancellation?

I'm in North Kildare, anyone else in the area find they can get all of the UK stations?

You can use your sky boxes to receive the Uk channels as they are yours but you wont get any of the Irish ones on them as they are encrypted.Your Tv might be Saorview compatible, and if it is you will only need to put up an aerial to get the Irish channels. If not you will need a Saorview box.The only thing that you will miss is the ability to be able to record things.

    Hi Technofobe,

What saorview aerial did you get? And where did you buy the amiko alien 2? Are the Irish channels in HD?

    Thanks! :)

You will need a U.h.f. aerial to get saorview .more info @ http://www.saorview.ie . there is a selection of aerials with good videos explaining almost everything you need to know here http://www.tvtrade.ie.

    @bystarlight
I got a saorview aeriel in ND electrical €19 same shape as this but a lot cheaper than harvey norman
    http://www.harveynorman.ie/tvs-headphones/set-top-boxes-and-aerials/aerials/one-4-all-outdoor-digital-aerial.html

The Amiko Alien 2+ I got in tvtrade.ie ( no I dont work for them or have any relationship with same ) every now and then they do special offers when I got mine there was an easter offer of 10% off and an online discount so I got it for €165 inc vat
And yes RTE 1 & 2 and BBC UTV and Channel 4 and some others like ITV are in HD
You can also stream in HD from the AA2 to your pc or tablet and watch a different station than the one being displayed on the main tv

Is there no modern TV's that have the aerial inbuilt into the TV? Is it possible to get a discreet small external aerial?

No none are built in. You either need the rabbits ears beside the TV or an external aerial. An amplified set of rabbits ears may do depending on the signal strength in your area.

    Powercity.ie have one for €25

If I was getting something from there, I'd go with this one. Mightn't be as discrete but it's cheaper (though doesn't seem to include cable) & can go outside too, if indoor reception fails.

Amplifiers on indoor aerials are a dubious prospect, at best. A low-noise amplifier might offer an improvement in installation signal to noise ratio but, it's all for nothing much if the signal from the aerial is so poor that you think you actually need an amplifier in the 1st place. Like, the only subjective benefit you might see is to turn 'no signal' into a glitchy, barely watchable programme.

Great guys thanks for the info!! Will look into amiko, it's also interesting that I probably have the makings of free sat & saorview already. My tv is saorview enabled I just found out, along with my Roku box & leftover Sky equipment it sounds like we might be sorted to save 1500 a year! (Madness)
