Sharing connection between 2 houses

    When I moved into my current abode, my friend lived right above me, albeit in a different address, he had internet and phone on the go and I could catch the signal of the router so I never got broadband. He moved out and I needed broadband so continued to pay for it myself, as I kind of knew the new tenants, I had no problem with them using it of course. The bill and everything is in my name but unfortunately, I'm having occasional problems with the connection and the router needs to be reset every now and then. I used to have a key to his place where I could just let myself in, but that's not the case anymore so I need to wait for the tenants to come home and as I need broadband for work, this is far from ideal.

    I'd like to get the router down to my place now but the problem is that it's connected to his phone line and as my own phone line has been inactive for years, I'd like to avoid the reactivation cost as well as the hassle of any down time or dealing with the provider.

    I'm trying to think what's the best DIY solution so. I'd like to avoid drilling through their floor/my roof as it's all rented accommodation.

    Once the router is down here, they will still be able to get the signal, but it just means I can reset it whenever necessary and get a better signal for myself.

    You can normally reboot a router on it's settings page under "maintenance" or similar. Try using 192.168.1.1 in a browser or just look up the make and model to find out how.

    Most providers will reactivate the line for free.

    Leave current one in place.
    Order broadband to your premises
    Wait for broadband in your premises to go live
    Cancel old account.

    Hmm, never thought of that. I'd be signing up for Vodafone Simply Broadband Max, which is what I'm currently on, at €35 a month with a €3 discount for being a mobile customer with them too so I get it for €32 a month, that's all I pay, no line rental or anything like that so I'm not sure if they'd reactivate it for free in that case? I wouldn't need another router or anything. I'll give them a call when I get a chance anyway!

    Line rental of €25 and a bit is included already in that price though isn't it?

    I thought you had to pay line rental regardless of if you have a landline number or not, it's the fee almost for accessing Eircoms network.

    I don't know what way Vodafone have it set up with Eircom, all I know is I pay €32 a month and I'm pretty happy with that :) You need the actual "line" activated regardless though, so there's actually a feed through it from what I know!?

    Have you checked if the line in your house has a dial tone? It might not be a bad thing if its not and if fibre is available they'll come out and reactivate your line and make sure the socket is good or even replace it- yeah sure its long winded but the noise margain often knocks off the connection or speed and my understanding is that its minimised with fibre. The ¨€3 discount will carry over to the new connection with vodafone anyway- you wont go back to €35 even by doing a home move....

    Thanks for that. I rang up today and did a premises move, won't cost me anything and they won't cancel the old line until the new one is live so there should be no down time at all. It might take a week or two before an engineer can come and set the new one up, but sure I've been using it as is for years so that's no issue. The only downside is I was out of contract and now doing a premises move will enter me into a new 18 month contract :(
