Sail & rail routings

Can anyone advise how the sail & rail routings (to places other than London) work?

Let's say for example that I want to get to Harwich from Holyhead. My understanding of the ticket is that it's an open ticket which allows any routing within reason. How is this enforced on the day? For example (not that I would actually do this . . .) can you go from Holyhead to London to Lowestoft to Harwich? At what point would the conductors think that enough was enough?

I think it was mentioned on here before that if you book with the .ie sites for the ferry companies you can't reserve seats on particular trains, but if you book with the .co.uk ones you can - is this correct?

It's an open ticket which allows any reasonable route. What's reasonable is open to interpretation though any conductors are liable to consult the routing guide which shows all permitted routes.

    The guide is available here

You can't reserve seats through the Ferry companies - you might be able to if you contact the train company's directly.

The reason you cant book train seats from .ie bookings is that the ferry may be delayed. Starting in uk you can book train seats.
