Welfare is crippling the country.

How are people on the dole able to afford cars, have nice smart phones, go on holidays etc.

Welfare is pure and pure crippling Ireland with the middle income getting an absolute bollixing.

I know that a lot of people are suffering on it but then others are living the life to be honest and getting a free council house while there at it. Why should they get a council house and someone working and actually paying taxes getting crippled to bits?

Should the people that are working not be getting the rewards and not the people who have not worked in their lives and a lovely free house for themselves.

How can we fix this welfare attitude?

    This is original!

How can we solve the problem? Or more importantly how can the government solve it?

They will be along shortly and slate you for starting this thread.

What I always hear is the poor single parents and they have no money for the baby and they need a house.

I had to leave Dublin with rents so high and I work and get no help.

    Great country for entitlement.

Well, doing some research before running your mouth on a public forum would be a good start.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

On what basis is it "crippling" the country?

It's not mathematically possible to afford all that flash stuff, even on maximum benefits - particularly with kids. Those dodgy loan companies exist for a reason.

Could you present some data to show how many people are on the dole because they can't be bothered looking for work? During the boom we had very little unemployment. What changed that all of a sudden 11% of the population became lazy good for nothings? Is it something in the water? Or maybe, now this is a little bit out there, their might be a lack of jobs, but I guess that is a crazy notion.

In fairness I don't think the problem is welfare.

From what I see people living this lifestyle you describe are working and drawing, this is a separate problem to welfare rates and allowances.

The fact is......, that people on welfare ARE better off than working people and I don't mean low paid workers, middle income earners end up worse off at the end of the month in regards of income!

The problem is the country can't afford it now. People are better off on the dole than getting a minimum wage job and people don't want to do 40 hours a week for an extra 50 euro than what they would get on welfare.

As unpopular an opinion as it is; end social housing altogether for starts.

Fair enough ya can't kick out people in a house 10 years but just decide from today that there is no such thing as a free gaff anymore and I'd say the whole welfare-entitlement sentiment wouldn't be long dieing off. If every parent in the country knows that the only way there children will ever leave the parental home is If they can afford to buy/rent elsewhere I'd imagine a lot more people would have a good work ethic instilled in them from day 1

"Free" council houses are often in areas with a lot of problems - why is this presented as something to begrudge?

You contradict yourself here. Which is it, do they make more on the dole or more in a minimum wage job?

Could you provide some actual numbers to back up either of those claims too please?

People on the dole more than six months should be compelled to manufacture pitchforks and torches to sell to those in employment.

I know a lad I was in leaving cert with and since then (7 years later) he hasn't worked a day in his life. Hes been doling it ever since.

When we were 18 his mother encouraged him not to get a job as she'd loose some of her allowances for him. This ethic obviously stuck and now he hangs around the house all week and drinks his 188e at the weekend.

Meanwhile after 6 years of college I have to plan my finances meticulously to make ends meet.

Scum of the earth as far as I am concerned.

If you were actually unfortunate enough to have had to live off welfare payments for over a few weeks you would be singing a different tune OP. Also not everyone qualifies for medical card and other subsidiary benefits.

RA is pretty much useless (in Dublin anyway) because there's so much demand for housing that even the scummiest of LL's can pick and choose who to rent their awful gaffs to.
