Hi i am a qualified sec teacher, registered in one subject with the teaching council and would like to register as an english teacher. I have studied English in first year of my primary degree over a decade ago but dropped it then in second year.

What would i have to do to register in English with the teaching council?

I have rang them but the person i spoke to didnt really know and told me research it further myself which i have tried to do. I dont want to do an irrelevant course so i would have liked the teaching council to explain further but ive already tried them and i find on here as informative as anywhere.

Can anyone help all replies appreciated.

Figure out how many credits you got from your first year course (get your transcripts). Then figure out how many credits you need to be a teacher in a subject, then do Ocsail modules to fill the gaps, making sure not to do first year modules again.

Not wanting to hijack your thread for a rant but that's an absolute joke. We pay the teaching council enough money for no clear benefit. The least they could do is provide their people who answer their phones with enough information to answer what should be relatively simple questions like that one.

Generally you need 60 credits in a subject to teach it. There's a chance coming in for January 2017 stating you'll also need to have studied the methodologies of your subjects too which most people do during their HDip.

Agree with the above poster re Teaching Council, they're a joke.

As for your situation, I think UCC (other colleges too possibly) offer a Higher Diploma in Arts (English) course which would enable you get the 60 credits but course would have already started so you would have to wait till next September for UCC at least.

If the previous poster's comment that "There's a chance coming in for January 2017 stating you'll also need to have studied the methodologies of your subjects too" is accurate (I wonder is there a source for this?) then it will put the kibosh on these Higher Diploma in Arts courses for teaching purposes.

Funny how a small unannounced (to my hearing anyway) and apparently undiscussed change will have monumental repercussions for so many teachers as we routinely see people on here looking to add an additional subject. If this change does transpire (and is enforced in practice) that'll be the end of that option for many people who otherwise would have taken the option.

Was thinking the same. I'll be qualified in History in 2016 I hope. But I've no doubt there's be some annoucement about methodology courses being made available in your local teacher centre for a mere €5,000. Probably spread over 2 years with 17 inspections along the way....

It's on the teaching council website. I can't remember where. I'm currently studying for a physics add on and want it out of the way before Jan 17. It'll be the last add on I do. It was announced a good while back. Teachers will need 60 credits to register as qualified where it is currently 54. (33% v 30%)

I'm amazed given the regularity with which people talk on this forum about adding an extra subject that this has not been more of a discussion point around here. Must have skipped the notice of quite a few people I'd say.

For some it might be a case that they just don't know and for permanent teachers, if they are permanent most aren't looking to add subjects so are not aware either

Obviously those not looking to add subjects don't need to be aware. But as one of the most frequently raised issues on this forum over the last few years such information would be of critical importance to some people. The fact that it has taken this long to be raised here is surprising in the context of the regularity with which it (adding a subject) has been discussed - a few people here have been practically championing the H Dip in Arts but I don't recall them adding this little all-important rider. That's all I'm saying (it's an irrelevance to me personally). I accept that it's probably on the TC website but not everyone is going to peruse that randomly. Good to have it highlighted here I think.
