    Guys,

Need a car for my wife. Around 7k budget. She does 30kmx2 a day to work and the odd trip to her family home 110km x 2. That's most of her driving. Generally not nipping around town or the like.

She likes the look of the 05/06/07 Ford Fiesta. Also thinking Opel Corsa or Kia Ceed. We'd ideally like something economical fuel wise and low enough to tax.

*I know very little about cars :)

    Any thoughts/ideas appreciated.

    Hyundai i30:

It's the sister car of the Kia Ceed and very reliable.

Thanks. I think that might be on the high end of our budget and we are ideally looking for something cheaper (1.2 engine) to tax.

The Kia Ceed that you mentioned costs the same to tax as the i30. Also there is about €30 per year in the difference between taxing a 1.25 litre Fiesta and a 1.4 litre Ceed/i30.

What about an '07 Suzuki Swift ? Would they be decent ?

    hmmm. That's true.

Not seeing any i30's near us though (Limerick). Would be stretching our budget to get a reasonably low mileage one.

A 05 or 06 Corolla hatch in Luna spec. They are a very reliable car with a good quality feel to them. The cabin in particular feels much better quality than its Korean rivals, Kia's cee'd and Hyundai's I30.

Tax is only fractionally higher than a 1.2 also so I wouldn't be dettered by it tbh.

Would have to say that's a bit of an exaduration, being very familiar with both cars.

I'm very familiar with all three tbh, it's not an exaduration, or at leat not in my experience. the first gen cee'd and i30 while being very good cars mechanically, were let down by a below average interior, the plastics in particular are very cheap on them. The dash and the door cards being prime examples, very scratchy cheap plastic.

To be fair, Toyota corolla, while being reliable as ever, is the most mundane, awful place to sit. Not that ceed or i30 are much better but to say corolla is a class above is a exaggeration to say the least.

Who said a Corolla is a class above? All three cars are in the same class.

A Corolla is a no worse place to sit than most cars from that class of the time though. It's interior quality is a cut above many other c segment cars from that era. It may be boring bit so are the vast majority of C class family cars. Cars from that class weren't made with excitement in mind.

How it that me saying it's from a class above?

Again please point out where I said the Corolla was from a class above? You can't point it out because it simply isn't there.

I did say the corolla has a better quality cabin compared to it's Korean rivals, because it does. The materials used feel and look much better. You obviously have no experience with these cars if you think otherwise tbh.

No it doesn't. If tacky plastic is your idea of quality then so be it. For me it isn't.

And I have owned an avensis from a similar year. Kia ceed in the family.
    Take the ceed any time.

For most people, choice of car is a very personal decision. Issues like fuel economy and road tax are important but you might need to look at those issues in a broader context, namely residuals, reliability, and running costs. Chances are that whatever car you buy, depreciation will be the single biggest cost.
