Students with no English

    Hi all,

A student with no (and I mean no!) English has recently joined my first year English class.

I have had her on Google Translate trying to get her to complete tasks along with the rest of the class, but not only is this time consuming for me in the class, I don't feel it is of much benefit to the student either.

Has anyone had any experience of this, and if so what approaches did you try?

I feel like I'm doing the student a disservice, and am conscious of losing her while I deliver the content to the rest; I just feel I'm ill-equipped to deal with her.

I presume with all the cut backs she's not getting any additional support?
I've had it in the past but it was a leaving cert student. I just had to differentiate all my work plans for her specially -
what Support has the school put in place for her? Have you any tefl experience that would help you? Or would any other teacher be able to help you?
If there's nothing in place I'd raise the issue at the next staff meeting as ultimately if this child isn't supported they'll only end up acting out in class due to frustration and boredom - then it becomes everybody's problem trying to manage the misbehaviour

Couldn't agree more with the above - already some discipline issues have been seeping in from other teachers. She hasn't endeared herself to her class either, acting inappropriately to the other students.

It's a tough one, and management, from what I can gather, don't seem to want to know much about it.

    Have no TEFL experience
