    Hi!

Before posting this, I have been reading others with similar issues/dilemmas so it's at least encouraging to see I'm not alone!

I'm in my early twenties (22/23), working full time in the IT sector in a job that's for life (career kinda job) Since finishing my leaving cert. 5 years ago I have been in and out of various courses and I even attempted to start a degree but I can never seem to stick with them.. It's not that I wasn't doing well, I was just lazy and couldn't see them through.. Been working on and off too in good IT related jobs as well..

I'm at a fork in the road, do I go left and stay in my current job, working my way up and perhaps go back to part time studies at some point? Or do I go right and leave work to study full time and be a student while I still can?..

If I become a full time student again, being older than most others there will I feel out of place and at a more mature level them the others ?

I feel if I stay working it will be great career wise but from a personal development point of view id be missing out on the college/student/young lifestyle that only comes around once..

    Tough decisions to make!!

    Barry.

Hi Barry! My brother is 24 and returned to college last September as a mature student! He had done 2 years in UL and then he dropped out and spent 2 years at home. In those 2 years he changed massively. He was a shell of his former self, he totally cut himself off from the world because he felt like a failure and didn't want to be reminded of any of it! He lost contact with all his friends, he had zero social life! Since he has gone back to college he has thrived! He has a girlfriend who is 20! Nobody treats him like he's old! One can tell he genuinely loves life now! He was terrified of taking de plunge back into education but he's delighted he did now! In saying that, Its a big commitment and you need to be willing to put in the work or you might end up like you did before! If you have a good job I think you are incredibly lucky with the state of the economy! Night courses could be ideal as you will be furthering yourself while maintaining your job!

If you want to keep your job, then you could do a part time course.
But you're still young, believe me there are lots of people way older than you going into college.
If you feel you'd love to be a full time student then go for it. Only you can decide.

    Good luck with your decision
