18 month contracts - not suitable for renters

I've just moved into a new apartment and signed a 12 month lease. I can't get UPC in my location (my preferred option). The area is however covered by Eircom's e-fibre. The thing is though all of their bundles are 18 months only. I can't guarantee that I'll still be in this accommodation after my lease is up so signing an 18 month contract seems too risky for me.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I presume it's an 18 month contract because it's front loaded with a discount for the initial 6 months and they want to recoup their earnings at the full rate. Is it possible to just pay the full rate for 12 months only?

You can get Magnet without a contract. Same as eircom and vodafone VDSL.

You can also get Vodafone VDSL (same as Eircom but cheaper!) on a 12 month contract, but then the router isn't free and I think it costs €50.

You should check first of course. These deals constantly change.

I'd be surprised if Eircom don't have a 12 month option too if you call them and ask.

I'm not sure I'd go with Magnet, they seem to have weird caps and are more expensive.

What happens if you sign up for Eircom for 18 months but cancel after 12. Are you on the hook for the last 6 months or is there just a cancellation charge?

The cancellation charge is the total of all the remaining bills.

You are most definitely are on the hook for the last 6 months as you have a contract with them and they will bill you for the last 6 months. However to avoid this it may be possible to transfer your eircom account to your new abode.

I had been looking at different options last year as we were moving house. UPC and Eircom did say they would allow one change of address free of charge during their contract

I did go with Magnet in the end just for an easy life though

There used to be a clause in some of those contracts that if you move house and they can't supply the service there, they will cancel the contract.
