Missing weapon

    Ok, here goes;

I had a house party on Friday night, one of those things where everybody in the club finds out the address and things get a little out of hand.

Obviously a few 'undesirable types' showed up, but they were friends of friends etc.

Anyway, now I notice that a huge K-Bar/Hunting/bowie knife is missing.

This thing is quite literally lethal, it has a serrated back so would gut you.

I'm hoping that whoever took it will be like me and just keep it in the house, use for camping/fishing...

Or, god forbid, it could be used on someone.

I don't want anyone to think that this is my main concern about this, but my prints are all over the thing and are on file.

Do I go to the cops and let them know? I obviously can't give any names even if I was sure, they would put the screws on me for that...

Besides, it could have changed hands once or twice since then.

(hopefully if it did, they gave it a good clean to get their own prints off there, but I cut myself sharpening it a few times, so probably my DNA on there too, but that's not on file)

Maybe make a statement to have it on record that it was lost in case something should ever happen, but not report it as a theft?

Just don't want a knock on the door in a few months time and get hauled away for something I had nothing to do with.

And, obviously, I don't ever want anybody to be hurt or injured because of this.

I just don't know what to do, forget it, try track it down (probably impossible) or report it?

    Thanks...

It's a dangerous weapon, so I'd personally report the theft to the Gardaí.

I'm assuming that it is legal to own such a knife in Ireland?

No, it's illegal to carry one in public unless it's legitimate use. ie for work, fishing etc. Then it has to be out of reach, like at the bottom of your bag.

What you have in your own home doesn't matter, people have bigger knives in their kitchen...

Report it to the Gaurds. Better to be safe than sorry.

In what way, like report the theft? That could have bad consequences for me...

    Try make a statement?

The boys in blue, whilst doing a difficult and largely thankless job, are not quite so professional and friendly with everybody they come across, it varies.

Especially with me, and especially when it comes to my local cop-shop. I'm no Pablo Escobar, but they know me by name and would love an excuse.

Last thing they pinned on me I got off on a technicality, so they are gunning for me.

I have been assaulted several times in custody.

A KA bar is essentially a weapon issued to USMC troops designed for one thing .
Though there could be several reasons to owning one here .
But you basically left a weapon unsecured in plan sight .
That it's self is asking for trouble and a lesson you should take in .

Personally I'd report it to the Gardaí asap give detailed description 's and pics if possible.

If you have other weapons I'd reconsider how and where you keep them if at all

It is not a K-Bar then...

I never said anything about plain sight, no idea where that came from.

It was in a dresser drawer under a bunch of clothes.

    report it to the Gardai

    Hi OP,

as everybody else here as pointed out above, the only real option here is to report the theft to the Gardai - it's a dangerous weapon, you don't know whose hands it's in now, and regardless of how you feel about the police, the theft of such a weapon is something that needs to be on record, for your own benefit too.
