I just started a computing degree, in 4th year we have to pick a section to major in and these two (Software Development & Cloud Computing) are the two im interested in.
Which of the two would be the best degree to have for the rest of my career.
Say if one was to decline and suddenly there was a lack of jobs which one would have the best job security and pay in the future based on current trends and opinions,

Impossible to say just with the course titles and not knowing the other content of the degree. But I'd guess that Software Development (presumably involving studying one or more programming languages) would be a safer bet than Cloud Computing (which I imagine to be more about infrastructure, IT management etc).

These are quite different disciplines - I'd be choosing based on where your own interests lie rather than trying to gaze into the future direction of computing, which is near impossible to predict. The one thing that can be safely predicted about a career in computing is that it will be full of new learning and change, so I'd pick the path that you like most right now.

    Software development 100%

Have a quick search for IT Jobs and the vast majority will be DBA work and Software development.

Do you prefer software development or sysadmin type stuff? Because both areas are quite different.

Personally, I used to work for a Cloud computing company, I'd stay away from this stuff. It has a lot of snake oil salesmen types in it.

You are just starting 1st year and are already worrying about 4th year?

Concentrate on passing your exams and getting to 4th year.

Along the way you learn many new things which will impact your decision for 4th year.

That said if you are can program it is easy to learn the cloud computing concepts.

Yep, stick with software development. The continued shortage of candidates in the infrastructure space is very welcome to those of us already in it ;)

Hollister11 should have done both - infrastructure as code and all that :p
