I finished a 'Basic Guarding Skills' course a week ago, applied for the PSA licence shortly, and have been applying for Security jobs this whole week.. been to two interviews, waiting to hear back from them (fingers crossed).. Anyways, just wondering whether there's anybody else that's working in Security (or is trying to work there) and wants to share how they've gone to where they are now, how long it took for you to find a job and so forth.

I have worked in security for the past couple of years. The work is inconsistent but pays well when you can get it. I went through a two month period of working 60-70 hours a week to working 1 day a week. It's not exactly a good long term career choice but plenty of companies hiring.

A waste of well over 400 euros I spent to get the damn thing. Haven't heard anything since the two interviews, except for a guy e-mailing me about scheduling an interview and then not even replying.
The funny thing about the two interviews is that one of those companies sent me a letter and I was referred to as "Ms. X X". The other company remained radio silent, except for me receiving a rejection letter dated about a week ago from them. Haven't even interviewed for a position with them since the September interview. What a joke..
Obviously I'm not finding anything now, but to be honest, I'm not feeling too hopeful for the future either. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I don't have any experience in the industry, or if it's that I'm not Irish (or both..).

What companies did you apply for? Good to have first-aid courses and fire warden starting out.

There is great potential to carve out a great career in security if you work hard at it, stick with it if your interested.

Naming each and every company I applied for would take a while.

I'm around the same age, plenty you can put in. Surely doing the course you done a few modules. Put them down as points of information. Give a good cover note what you can do as a person, punctual, good appearance, excellent communication skills all that sort of stuff. Look at what there asking in the Ad, customize your cover note and CV to suit it. Takes time and effort but you'll get a bite in the end. This game is like fishing, no bites, a bite that gets away and then a bite that sticks.

All of that is already in the CV, mate. The thing about customizing the cover letters for each and every ad and you know, telling them about my abilities is that.. when it comes to the job, I don't really have that many. Say, the ad says you have to patrol the premises that you're guarding. "I would be competent at patrolling the premises, uh, because I think so" isn't good enough. If I haven't done it, can't really say that it's something that's my competency, even if it's as easy as it sounds. So it becomes very limited as to what I can say with honesty.. and I don't really want to blow smoke up anyone's ass.

Well if you are competent at patrolling the premises and know you can do it, say 'I would be competent in patrolling the premises, as I have an eye for detail and would notice anything unusual or any unusual behavior'. Like you didn't just pick security, you must have competences that you think would benefit been a security guard use them in the CV your not lying tell them why your suitable for the role, having an understand of the stuff they want is half the battle, experience is the other. You could be security guard 5 years and have a crap CV not selling yourself and won't get picked up, starting out sell yourself well and you'll be picked up.
