Ours never see the Mart. We finish them ourselves. Maybe more lads are doin that.

i'm th other side of the country and have to say the quality is improving every year. the major issue im seeing is that there isnt the difference being given for a good u and an r grade. im starting to lean over more towards milky cows and worrying less about the peachy bums from this year on.

A lot of the good ones are either kept on or snapped up off the field! You'll find quality at the show sales though but you'll also be paying for them, was always hard to get any sort of a good animal cheap.

There's 6 lads looking at the good one for a reason and it'll be the same in any mart you go to.

Dead right, I have a couple of neighbours that only buy R+/U grade weanlings. They don't care what they cost to buy, keep them for a year and sell them at a loss. They look good in the field along the road though, during the summer:)

Isn't much reason to that making a loss! Overall the holstien ruin this country of good replacement breeding heifer compared to what come out of the British cow. I was told by an ai man there is a lot of scrub bull let out to cow's?

Maybe the holstien did away with with some breeding but in fairness the amount of AI breeding in the suckler herds should have left plenty of fine breeding heifers around .
Whats a scrub bull these days aswell ? I doubt there are too many lads using them when you see the value in PB bulls in the last couple of years .

Maybe its a mad thought but what kind of heifers would you get if you put a good looking limo bull out of a friesan cow onto a big strong ch/limo cow ? There are alot of these cows around now and they haven't a tint of milk after all the "breeding " lads have put into them .

Probably an odd good calf but no consistency across the herd.

I know a lad with a black limo bull out of a friesain cross blue cow, theres a queue of lads for the heifers but hes hard pressed to sell the bulls every year, the colours are coming crazy at times.

I don't subscribe to the colour theory at all. I have sold mouse brown belgian blues for €3.20 per kilo. If the beast is good enough the price will follow. Hair does not count to the carcass weight on the factory line.

The color does make a difference. I've sold the best of grey Charlie weanlings as much as 80-100 kg heavier than white or gold Charlie's for as much as €100 less
Very frustrating but that's the market

+1 or else shippers buying them off the land

Not if they are good enough for the Italian trade. That is the best or the only place to make money from weanlings and colour don't matter there.

so what you are saying is look for mousey brown cattle if you're at the mart because you'll get better value?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭The Letheram

No. Saying a good one will be dear regardless of colour. I do understand the appeal of a golden charolais or a nice light coloured limo but a good one will always make their money.

Gort mart Co. Galway always seem to have a lot of good quality weanlings at their Thursday evening sale.

Rob you on commission, the most ignorant auctioneer I have ever come across, slow to pay and and I don't think I was ever rightly happy with the price of anything I sold there. Good stock there alright but a better place to buy them than sell them I think.
